Many people complain that the Ukrainization of society is rather slow. But is it really so? Let me tell you my story with the Ukrainian language, being a Russian-speaking resident of Kyiv almost all my life. If we speak objectively, Ukrainian has advanced very actively in recent years. At least that's how it seems to me, it's a shame that I switched to Ukrainian already after the start of the full-scale invasion, but this is what I remember from my teenage and young age.
In 2007, I perfectly remember how it was with the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian-speaking culture in particular. These were small islands in the middle of the Russian-speaking ocean. A trifle slightly larger than statistical error. It was incredible luck to hear Ukrainian just walking through the streets of the city. I remember how acquaintances from Lviv came to me and complained that they were practically not accepted in the capital and often even made fun of them.
Russian was the language of service - absolutely everywhere you were addressed in Russian, because employers demanded it. Even if you addressed yourself in Ukrainian (I know this only from the stories of my Ukrainian-speaking friends, because let me remind you, I was a Russian speaker for a very long time). Advertising on billboards and posters, signs - 50/50, but if something is "elite" or "youthful" - it must be in Russian.
We are now talking about what happened about 15 years ago, the music on the radio and in the transport was Russian. Newspapers and magazines - in Russian. There were no social networks, only LJ, which was dominated by Russian. Even after Vkontakte appeared, everything was in Russian. Ukrainian-language portals could be counted on the fingers of one hand. And a giant field of Russian-language content on Ukrainian and Russian sites that were offered to us. Let me remind you that the Internet was slow and very expensive then. And precisely because of this, everyone adapted to the Russian language, because there was practically no alternative.
In order to listen to Ukrainian performers, you had to go to Pochaina to buy CDs. Finding something Ukrainian-speaking there besides OE was a task with an asterisk. It was only later, after a certain period of time, that I discovered such bands as Mertvyi Piven, Tartak, TNMK, singer Katya Chili. And only because I wanted to know what they sing in Ukrainian, not because it appeared.
There were practically no books in Ukrainian. Ukrainian-language dubbing of films was already in the cinema and made up about half of the screenings. But it was also an innovation - the first film with Ukrainian dubbing was released only in 2006. It was later that our dubbing became one of the best in the world, and then the translation left much to be desired.
It is important: Ukrainian-speaking culture was lacking not in favor of English-speaking culture (or any foreign culture), but to the detriment of Russian-speaking culture. For every 100 AC/DC fans, there were 1,000 Aria fans (Russia) and 1 "Shadow of the Sun" fan (Ukraine).
Punks on Kontraktova sang KiSh (Russia), not Fleet (Ukraine). And instead of poems by Zhadan (Ukraine), the shelves were not Eliot (USA), but Brodsky (Russia).
And this is Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, there were more opportunities there. Do you know how people from smaller towns lived? And Kyivans to a certain extent. In order to receive Ukrainian-language quality content...
There was a website of enthusiasts who collected everything in Ukrainian. There it was necessary:
- Download the excel file
- Choose what you want. Write a letter to their email
- These people recorded a DVD at home and mailed it to you
- Instead of paying, you could top up their mobile phone. At the same time, it was of your own free will (if you did not have extra money, you could not send them anything)
And it was 15-17 years ago, when I was a teenager and a little interested in our culture. Because why actively study something about my own, if I have so much of someone else's....
During this period, many things have changed, but people's desire to be Ukrainian, to study their history, to get to know their culture does not disappear. On the contrary, with the beginning of the full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine, our people are beginning to study history even more active and take an interest in everything that Ukraine has created. And that's how we will win.
I believe that there will be a day when absolutely all Ukrainians will realize that they are not Russians, they have their own culture, otherwise, there is no need to perceive it as their own and then everyone will fight back against the invader. And let them sit there with their Pushkin, Tolstoy, Fet and so on. Moreover, I am sure that I know more creators from Russia than Russians themselves.

Багато людей скаржиться, що українізація суспільства досить повільна. Але чи насправді це так? Давайте розповім свою історію з українською мовою, будучи практично все своє життя російськомовним жителем Києву. Якщо говорити об'єктивно, то за останні роки українська просунулась дуже активно. Принаймні мені так здається, соромно що я перейшла на українську вже після початку повномасштабного вторгнення, але ось що я пам'ятаю з свого підліткового та молодого віку.
У 2007 році я чудово пам’ятаю, як воно було з україномовністю і україномовною культурою зокрема. Це були маленькі острови серед російськомовного океану. Дрібнота, дещо більша за статистичну похибку. Почути українську просто гуляючи вулицями міста це була неймовірна вдача. Пам'ятаю, як до мене приїздили знайомі зі Львову та скаржились на те, що їх практично не сприймають в столиці і часто-густо навіть глузували з них.
Російська була мовою сфери обслуговування – абсолютно всюди до тебе зверталися російською, бо цього вимагали роботодавці. Навіть, якщо ти звертався українською (знаю це виключно з історій моїх україномовних друзів, бо нагадаю, я російськомовною була дуже довго). Реклама на бордах і афішах, вивіски – 50/50, але якщо щось «елітне» чи «молодіжне» - то обов'язково російською.
Ми тепер говоримо про те, що було приблизно років 15 тому, музика на радіо, в транпорті – російська. Газети і журнали – російською. Не було соцмереж, лише ЖЖ, в якому домінувала російська. Навіть, після появи вконтакті все було російською. Україномовні портали можна було порахувати на пальцях однієї руки. І гігантське поле російськомовного контенту на українських і російських сайтах, котрі нам пропонувались. Нагадаю інтернет тоді був повільним та дуже дорогим. І саме через це всі пристосувались до російської мови, бо альтернативи практично не було.
Для того, щоб послухати українських виконавців потрібно було відправлятись на Почайну купувати диски. Знайти там щось україномовне крім ОЕ було задачею з зірочкою. Це вже потім, через певний період часу я відкрила для себе такі гурти, як Мертвий Півень, Тартак, ТНМК, виконавицю Катю Чилі. І тільки тому що мене тягнуло дізнатись що ж співають українською, а не тому що це з'явилось.
Книг українською практично не існувало. Україномовний дубляж фільмів у кіно вже був і складав десь з половину сеансів. Але й це була інновація – перший фільм з україномовною озвучкою вийшов лише у 2006-му. Це згодом наш дубляж став одним із найкращих в світі, а тоді переклад залишав бажати кращого.
Важливо: україномовної культури було мало не на користь англомовної (чи будь якої зарубіжної), а на корить російськомовної. На кожних 100 фанів AC/DC було 1000 фанів Арії (росія) і 1 фан «Тіней Сонця» (Україна).
Панки на Контрактовій співали КіШ (росія), а не Фліт (Україна). А замість віршів Жадана (Україна) на полицях стояв не Еліот (США), а Бродський (росія).
І це Київ, столиця України, там було більше можливостей. А знаєте як жили люди з менших міст? Та і кияни в певній мірі. Для того, щоб отримати україномовний якісний контент...
Був сайт ентузіастів, які збирали все українською. Там треба було:
- Скачати ексель файл
- Обрати собі, що ти хочеш. Написати лист на їхній імейл
- Ці люди записували в себе вдома ДВД і відсилали тобі його поштою
- Замість оплати ти міг поповнити їм мобільний. При цьому це було за власним бажанням (якщо в тебе не було зайвих грошей ти міг нічого не надсилати їм)
І це було років 15-17 назад, коли я була підлітком і трішки цікавилась нашою культурою. Бо навіщо активно щось вивчати про своїх, якщо в мене стільки чужого....
За цей період багато всього змінилось, але бажання бути українцем, вивчати свою історію, знайомитись з культурою у людей не зникає. А навпаки, із початком повномасштабної війни росії проти України, наші люди починають ще активніше вивчати історію та цікавитись всім, що Україна створила. І саме так ми переможемо.
Я вірю, що буде день коли абсолютно всі українці усвідомлять те, що вони не росіяни, в них є своя культура, інакше не потрібно сприймати як своє і тоді всі дадуть відсіч загарбнику. І нехай вони там сидять у себе з своїм Пушкіним, Толстим, Фетом і так далі. При чому я впевнена, що знаю більше творців з росії, чим самі росіяни.
