Understanding the Impact of Sexual Assault

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, reminding us of the crucial need for empathy, support, and kindness in the aftermath of sexual violence. To help raise awareness, we will be launching a new blog series titled "Acts of Kindness - Supporting Survivors Together."

This blog series is dedicated to this very important cause and aims to promote understanding, facilitate healing, and inspire action within our communities.

Sexual assault remains a serious problem in society, with many survivors facing devastating effects. Here are some important statistics to highlight the urgency of taking action.

Some Statistics

  • 1 in 5 women and nearly a quarter (24.8%) of men in the U.S. have experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime. (National Sexual Violence Resource Center).
  • An estimated 81% of women and 43% of men report experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime, with a significant portion of victims first experiencing assault during their youth.
  • About 3% of American men, or 1 in 33, have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime, highlighting that 1 out of every 10 rape victims are male (RAINN).
  • Transgender, genderqueer, and nonconforming college students face a higher risk, with 21% having been sexually assaulted, compared to 18% of non TGQN females, and 4% of non TGQN males (RAINN).
  • The majority of female victims of completed or attempted rape report their first victimization occurred before age 25, demonstrating the early impact of such violence (National Sexual Violence Resource Center).
  • The economic toll of rape, including medical costs, lost productivity, and criminal justice activities, is estimated at $122,461 per victim, reflecting the profound financial burden on survivors in addition to the emotional and psychological scars (National Sexual Violence Resource Center).
  • Girls and young women aged 16-19 are four times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than the general population, with a significant majority of perpetrators being someone the victim knows (PlanStreet).

These statistics only scratch the surface of the issue but they highlight the crucial importance of supporting survivors through understanding, kindness, and empathy. Each of the blog posts in the series will explore a different aspect of kindness and sexual assault awareness, from understanding the impacts of sexual assault and exploring the healing power of kindness, to discussing how we can create safe spaces and advocate for survivors' rights.

I can’t even imagine what people who have been assaulted sexually go through, I pray they all find peace and move on from the pains.

I am more than willing to join you on this journey.

Always a #dreemerforlife

Thank you, my friend. It is very tragic, and the fact that victims are often blamed is disgraceful!

This is really beautiful. I've had a friend who is a victim of rape and I must say they aren't finding it easy to accept life as it is. I'm glad there are people with beautiful souls out there like you helping them out in the little way you can. I'll be really willing to join you on this journey.

It is awful that this happens and that it can be so difficult to recover from. It is also terrible that victims are sometimes blamed and many assaults go unreported.

A very sad but important subject to discuss for sure.

hello from a fellow #dreemerforlife

Unfortunately, many assaults go unreported.
