Hello dear ones of HIVE, you creative, talented and crazy bunch of amazingness! I need your help!

I'm entering a challenge where you have to write a mushroom related limerick to win a book! Now I'm not that great at limericks so I enlisted a good friend to help. He's a legend of limericks and composes them when he's meditating, particularly on those 40 day silent retreats (yes, I know - who'd be in THAT head, am I right?). So he's what he came up with:

There once was a man called Fred
Who grew mushrooms in his bed
They grew through his nose
And out of his toes
And tasted real good, so he said.

Reading through some of the really good entries I felt I needed to tweak it a little, but I'm not sure if I'm there yet either!

There once was a man called Jim
Who was made from mycellium
It grew out of his nose
And betwixt his toes
He sold it to all who knew him.

Aagh. This is where I need your help. Either tweak mine to perfection or write a damn good limerick for me to submit by Tuesday AEDT time. If it's worthy, I'll set you as post beneficiary when I write about winning the book! But it has to be in by Tuesday a.m my time.

Even if it's not, you can still win 5 HIVE! Write me a limerick that makes me laugh (mushroom related) and I'll award the best with a fiver. Of course, I'm gonna need three limericks in the comments below to award a prize - y'all gotta join in the fun!

Tagging a few people I think might be good at this - and feel free to tag others you think might be good at it too! What do you reckon @amirtheawesome1, @mrprofessor, @meesterboom or @owasco?

With Love,

I’ll have to write a few more, we’ll see. Haha, but it’s too much fun to resist, although the ones you have already are probably better

1
Some blow the mind
Some are beneficial
and nicer than treacle
Fungi is just so much fun
Even though it’s often grown on dung

2

There was and old woman
Who sprouted fungi in the dark
She thought it a lark
because others had to forage or find it on tree bark
Exotic, delicious or toxic she was always sold out by five on the mark

Fungi is just so much fun
Even though it’s often grown on dung

😂😂😂😂

There once was a man named Fred
who was a bit wonky in the head
some said it was the ‘shrooms
that grew in his shoes
but his wife said it was the manure he spread

Oh genius! You did it! How's your head! Limericks are absolutely bananas to write aren't they? You have to find that exact rhythm.

I think I need some of that magic manure, ahah!

I do like my double entendre there: either he's tripping, or the wife meant he spreads a lot of bullshit.

Oh damn I missed that one - probablhy as my head is full of limericks, it's driving me crazy now ahaha!

I actually really liked the Jim -Mycell)-i-um part

Great find!

Limericks... wow!
This reminds me of primary school.

Challenge accepted!

@raj808 don't miss out on this one ;^)

Can't wait to read yours 😂

I forgot but I wrote a gardening update, just now ;<)

How's this:
James was a purposeful fella
who dodged rain neath a large portabella
when the sun shown again
he stepped out with a grin
and bit into his natural umbrella

Oh my god that's fantastic!!! I love it!!!! So cute!

Here is mine @riverflows:

There was once a man named Fred
Who for getting laid set aside a new bed
A huge failure he turned out to be
As for years no girl did his loins see
Till the bed aged and mushrooms sprouted

😂 @nevies This is so bad but I wanted to tag you but forgot your name!!! I think it's because I'm brain dead from trying to come up with a limerick. Now I have you I can add you to my favourites list.

It's all good 😂😂

There once lived a farmer named Bilbo
In his garden he refused to till, though
Mushrooms and toadstools sprouted from his land
A bountiful harvest that filled many a hand
The secret to his success no one will know

How's that? 🍄

There once lived a farmer named Bilbo
In his garden he refused to till, though

That's an awesome start!!! I can't believe so many responded already. Who knew you were a limerick genius too? 😂

I was indoctrinated with poetry pretty early in my life!

Man of many talents! Poetry and plants!

I riffed off yours, what about this!

There once was a farmer called Bill
His land he refused to till
Mycellium spread through his land
Of course it was planned
For the food there was so plentiful!

THis is wasting a LOT OF my time :P

I like it!

I like this one a lot. especially the part 'ofc it was planned' )))

Challenge accepted!

Not high on shrooms yet
'cause mine not stroganoff
Went to the forest for some more
but there wasn't mush left
In truffle I am, 'cause not high on shrooms yet!

Going to try and create some more. Updates later. ^~

I love it! More please!

Not high on shrooms yet
'cause mine not stroganoff

HAha - very clever!

Gonna try and come up with some more today untitled.gif

I go for puns mostly. Nice challenge!

The was a man in Portobello who was old,
He wanted to be rich and break the Mold,
He searched for treasure west and Yeast,
Found the Spot where he expected it least,
and got into Truffle, worth its weight in gold.

There once were magic shrooms on the hill,
that did not contain any chlorophyll,
they did have some psilocybin,
which made everyone see a twin,
until they got force-fed the reality pill.

There once was a cute-as-a-button Shroom,
who met a stalky guy in full bloom,
He was sedcued by a plant-eating smut,
She gave a yeast infection to that mutt,
Meanwhile, the shroom had Ergot a groom.

Fabulous .. I bet you had fun wrting these and they are super shrroooomy! 🍄

Lol. I will have a think. It certainly is a tricky subject matter for a limerick!! The first one above is rather good :0D

There's some hilarious comments here I thought you'd appreciate anyway 😂

Haha, I did indeed. Some of the contents are rather hilarious!! :0)

wow, this is a cool news - which book you gonna obtain?
I am not a native speaker pretty sadly I am no help at all.
you can have only my aesthetical evaluating skills 😂

the 2nd one (with Jim) I did not like at all, besides that Jim / micellium looks like a big stretch and do not rhyme (imo).

the 1st version I like very much! its almost perfect

There once was a man called Fred
Who grew mushrooms in his bed
...
...
And tasted real good, so he said.

tho these lines I indicated with ( ... ) are less sympatico to me.

some mushroom !PIZZA goes your way. and I hope @owasco come here with a little help too 🤸

The book is called Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation by Trad Cotter - have you heard of it?

I think the first one is good too! Simple is best, right?

I'd put it like 'Simple can be the best', but not necessarily it will be. 😎
No, I havent heard of Trad Cotter, but its not surprise, as in most cases I am a target market for translations and Russian-adopted editions, or original books written in Russian.
I have got only one EN book (as a free pdf), named "book of fungi. life-size guide to 600 species", for identifying purposes. (I can share the file if you're intrested).

Thanks!!! I have a few id books and tbh I need an Australian one!

sure thing, books on the local mushrooms would be a must

I'm not a limerick-er either! But I'll see what I can do for sure.

I'd change your last line to

He fed it to all who knew him

Oh thankyou!!! Which version do you prefer? As @qwerrie said above (thanks @qwerrie!) the ' sympatico' of the first couplet seems more on point. It's an interesting exercise nonetheless... Have a go!

I really like your friend's the best so far. There's great motion in it, I can see the mushrooms growing first on the sheet, entering his nose, passing through his body to his toes. The end is a bit icky which makes it really funny. It's a winner.

Yes, he's a bit of a limerick genius! I think I got bamboozled by the big words on some of the other entries, but a limerick has to be simple and if they don't see that they are crazy themselves!

Sorry can't help with this. But good luck. I hope you get it right!

I think I've written three or four more since yesterday! Once you start..

There once was a girl called Amy
Whose cooks up a storm rather gaily
From shikake with spice
To enoki with rice
Her mushrooms never fail me!

The more I do, the easier it gets. I really should do something more useful with my day!

But there, now you have truly lived - someone just wrote a limerick for you!

don't be tempted by the beauty of mushrooms, because beautiful ones are not necessarily good for us to have, "poisonous mushrooms"

I know I didn't tweak it,
But I used the opportunity to leak it
inspired to write a little rhyme of mine
in your comment section hoping you wont mind.

Haha excellent!
