Determining why

Discipline equals freedom.

- Jocko Willink -

For most of my adult life I've had direction, known where I wanted to go, what I wanted to achieve and what focus I needed to step forward towards the objectives I'd set, or had set for me. With ownership, responsibility, discipline and action I've been able to do what's required, sometimes incredibly difficult things, to attain those goals.

Focus, persistence, accountability, perseverance, discipline, consistency, resilience, fortitude, courage and a myriad of other personality traits have combined to gain those results. Well up that list has been the ability to stand when it would be easier to fall. It's partly sheer dogged determination peppered with a little stubbornness and simple need; the need to achieve a thing.

I've mostly managed to find and apply these elements without trouble, and win, lose or draw I've taken responsibility for myself and my outcomes. Mindset and attitude have largely been responsible for that. But what happens when I'm in the wrong headspace, when attitude flags and the right mindset is elusive?

I was thinking about this last night after coming to the understanding that someone close to me is struggling to stand, to find those elements I mention above.

I'll not write about that individual today, but wanted to share a thing that has helped me stand when it was easier to fall, find the ownership of self to find and display courage and to find belief in myself. It's a simple thing, almost laughable in its simplicity in fact.

The compelling why

I'm often asked how I've managed to achieve certain things, overcome, adapt, pivot and move forward to resolutions, objectives and desired results. It's a good question. I don't have a complicated answer for it though, and my answer isn't a cure-all for others as it's specific to me. But it's a simple concept that revolves around the very simple three letter word of, why.

Asking, then answering, that question to myself has enabled me to trigger the correct or required responses and reactions and that's what allows me to stand, take the first step towards the second step and, after enough steps, results come...or failures which I evaluate, strategise and plan around, then begin over...with another step.

Knowing why I want or need to achieve a thing, if compelling enough, will cause me to do what's required to affect it. That's the premise anyway.

Knowing your why, having a compelling reason to act, will more easily allow a person to act in the manner conducive to success. Many humans have achieved amazing results and, despite some being more intelligent or skilled in particular areas than others, we're all humans and all have the ability to determine if the reason to achieve a goal or objective is compelling enough to cause the attitudes and actions to occur to gain the result.

Have you struggled to stand? Have you felt inclined to stay down because it's easier than getting up and taking action? Has fear frozen you on the spot? Has courage failed you?

We have all experienced these things, myself included.

Conversely, have you ever had a compelling reason that brought you the ability to find and apply the required elements allowing you to shoot straight at the goal or task? I have, as have others. It's the compelling why-motivation that permits ordinary people like you and I to take aim, act and achieve extraordinary things.

Tell me, what extraordinary things have you done, and why?

  • Writing for a couple of weeks straight on hive, I believed I couldn't write even one article when I started here, now I can write a few, I would write with a friend of mine daily, who is a famous blogger in India - @sidwrites
  • Running for a few kms. When I was a kid, I was really bad at sports. Couldn't run, or play anything, but training with a fitness enthusiastic friend, I started with running 500m daily, build it up to 3-4 kms in a matter of months.
  • Learning something difficult - all my life, I have opted for the easiest choices. The least resistance of entry, the smallest role in a company. Last year, I tried to learn coding. And after trying some courses, I find it a fun thing to do. Might build something in the next few years in the tech world.
  • Doing adventure sports - still couldn't believe that I have done bungy jumping, rafting, paragliding etc.
  • Most difficult of all, I have always run away from responsibilites, and ownership because I felt like I could not take care of myself, how can I take care of someone else. But 6 months ago, I got married, realized I am more mature and responsible than I thought. Everything is going good. Getting slowly back to all the fun stuff I used to do like hive, learning to code, reading books.

Overall, my expectations from my life, 4-5 years ago were literally zero. I was sure that I would not be able to do something of value in my life.

Turning my mindset around from zero to something is extraordinary for me🙂

Sidwrites has been absent for a long time...Is he still around? His last post was about getting covid 19.

Mindset is everything, so I'm glad you're finding the right attitudes and achieving some results because of it.

Nope, he isn't around. He has become a millionaire in crypto bull runs, moved to Dubai, working on some startups etc.

He likes to quit everything and start his life from a new angle every year or so.
I am sure he will be back on hive and share his crazy experience after a couple of years😃

The bull runs and start ups huh? OK.

That is definitely a great and easy motivator :)

Because of at least one brain glitch which says I can get to a state where I simply do not care (even when logically I know I should or normally would), I mostly power along on sheer unadulerated spite.

I have not done anything extraordinary.

Spite can be a powerful motivator, many have used it to achieve their ends.

I have not done anything extraordinary.

I call bullshit. I think you have.

If I have, I haven't noticed :)

Trust me, others have.

I am 42 years of age, have finally enrolled for further studies for my career growth and i find it extraordinary because I am getting out of my comfort zone.

Have a lovely day @galenkp. Your writing always amazes me.

This is great news and I'm pleased you're taking your future into your own hands, showing ownership and responsibility. Nice work! 😎

Thank you for your kind compliment, I guess I just write what I feel or think and hope for the best. I have also done a lot of things and been to a lot of placed, physically and emotionally so have a lot of experience to draw from. I'm far from the smartest person in the world, but don't really want to be. I just want to experience, develop and grow and live my life the best I can along the way.

All the best for the week.

You have always been a man of wisdom sir and I would always love feeding off your ideas. I always learn. Just as we say in Economics, there is a what, how and when but with life, there is a why. Once we understand the why, the others would follow.

I didn't know that was an economics term, but I like it. There is always a why and if it is strong enough, great things can be achieved.

Absolutely sir... How is your week going already and the new job?

Hey mate, the week is going well, I'm wrapping up my role here over the next few days with my last being Thursday. I want to leave it in good shape, leave no reason for anyone to doubt my professionalism when I'm gone. So, I'm busy doing that and still working with accounts as required. I'll do a post about it tomorrow I guess, like a wrap up one.

I have a week off ahead in which I'll go shooting and hiking a lot and do a few meet ups here and there. Then it'll be straight into my new role which I hope will prove to be a good one.

I hope your week is also going well.

That's amazing and I trust you. You like attention to details which is why I know that you won't leave any stone unturned before leaving.

I can't wait to read the post as well. You deserved that one week.

Mine is going great...mixed emotions but relaxed too.

Mixed emotion hey? Well, I hope you make sense of them and step forward.

Thank you sir. I sure will.

Causality. There is no escape from it. We are forever slaves to it.
Our only hope, our only peace, is to understand it, to understand the why. “Why” is what separates us from them, you from me. “Why” is the only real source of power. Without it, you are powerless.

Indeed...That's a good dialogue.
