Dark Harvest takes us to an isolated North American town where every Halloween, a strange creature called "Sawtooth Jack" comes to life and roams the town looking to reach the community's church, if it succeeds before midnight, the town will suffer a fateful destiny. Despite having an interesting premise, I came into this movie with low expectations. It's a slasher with divided reviews, so I didn't expect much from it and that's exactly what I got, little. I'm going to start by referring to what I did like, which, although it wasn't much, I'm not going to deny that there were things that for me were redeemable within everything of dubious quality. The first thing that caught my attention of Dark Harvest was its premise, I liked the whole story of the tradition of a town that risks its young people as if they were tributes to a creature that threatens the prosperity and welfare of the people.
At this point, it reminded me of the ancient beliefs of making offerings to please the gods and ensure the fertility of the land. Although the story does not take place exactly in the present day, but in the 50's and 60's, it was interesting to see this concept brought to a slightly more current time, which was complemented very well with the touch of terror and threat that "Sawtooth Jack" represents for the entire town. Which happens not only during the hunt, but represents a constant threat in case he is not stopped in time.
Continuing with the positive, we have the deaths. Perhaps there weren't as many as I would have liked, however, there were some extremely gory ones, which gave a much-needed touch of gore to the film, which slightly lifted the pace of the hunt. Although they fell into exaggeration to some extent, there were a couple that were surprisingly shocking and stood out to me as the highlights of the film.
And finally, on the positive side, there is the visual aspect. Being set in the 50's-60's era, I liked the costume and set design quite a bit. The film has an aesthetic that reminded me to some extent of Grease, which contrasts perfectly with the grim and gory nature of the events. I also liked the creature design, however, with a little more budget, it would have been much scarier and less cartoonish.
Unfortunately, the negative point of Dark Harvest, despite being only one, is extremely transcendental and is that the story makes absolutely no sense, the premise is good, yes, but they did not know how to take advantage of it properly. There are too many things that are left in the air, starting with the origin of the creature, at no time do they tell us how the "curse" of the town originated, it's just like that and that's it. In this "just because", also enter the reason why you can not leave the village, although there are people who have done so without having won in the hunt, it is seen as an escape. They do not explain if it is because of the entity, because of a law or what, it is just something that is not done and there is no reason behind it.
Among the inconsistencies of the story is the fact that adults take such a careless risk with their children. Not only do they throw them out to hunt a creature that can slaughter them in a second, but on top of everything else, before throwing them into the ring they lock them up and let them starve, for what, just for the benefits of winning, to keep the town from going to the dogs? Perhaps if they had explained the reason why they can't just get out of there and spare their children the trauma, all this would have made sense, but they didn't, and the story loses all support. Not to mention that the final revelation of the movie implies one more risk for the participants of the hunt, which makes everything that happens much more illogical.
But what left me completely speechless is that the whole idea of the hunt is supposed to be to stop the monster from reaching the church (why just the church? They don't explain that either), so why the hell do they put a bunch of teenagers to do such a transcendental task, the worst of all is that instead of sending them in their best shape, they make them starve the previous days supposedly so they arrive more ferocious. Ferocious? It will be more like weakened and on the verge of fainting, but as the movie is totally illogical, the youngsters come out as if they had consumed steroids or some hallucinogen. The story is simply one nonsense after another until it comes to an end.
Not to mention the denouement, predictable and to some extent, anticlimactic. By that point I didn't expect anything from the movie, and it still managed to disappoint me.
Despite all the inconsistencies, I managed to keep myself entertained with the deaths and the fantastical premise. Is it a movie I'd like to see again? Of course not, come on, I wouldn't have wanted to see it in the first place, however, it wasn't all bad. It's also not a movie I can recommend, plain and simple, because the plot lacks sense and logic, maybe it can be enjoyed watching it in a very superficial way, but the moment we want to look for an explanation to something, the whole plot will fall apart. If you are still curious enough to watch it, I am sure you will find something better to waste your time on.

Lo cual sucede no solo durante la cacería, sino que representa una amenaza constante en el caso de que no sea detenido a tiempo.
Siguiendo con lo positivo, tenemos las muertes. Quizás no fueron tantas como me hubiera gustado, sin embargo, hubo algunas sumamente sangrientas, lo que le dio un toque muy necesario de gore a la película, que levantó ligeramente el ritmo de la cacería. A pesar de que hasta cierto punto cayeron en la exageración, hubo un par que fueron sorpresivamente impactantes y que me parecieron las más destacadas de la película.

Dentro de las incoherencias de la historia está el que los adultos arriesguen de manera tan despreocupada a sus hijos. No solamente los lanzan a cazar a una criatura que los puede masacrar en un segundo, sino que además de todo, antes de lanzarlos al ruedo los encierran y los dejan pasar hambre, ¿para qué?, ¿simplemente por los beneficios de ganar?, ¿para evitar que el pueblo se vaya al traste? Quizás si hubieran explicado la razón por la que no pueden simplemente irse de ahí y evitarle el trauma a sus hijos, todo esto hubiera tenido sentido, sin embargo, no lo hicieron y con ello la historia pierde todo sustento. Eso sin contar con que la revelación final de la película implica un riesgo más para los participantes de la cacería, lo cual hace mucho más ilógico todo lo que pasa.
Pero lo que me dejó completamente sin palabras es que se supone que toda la idea de la cacería es detener al monstruo para que no llegue a la iglesia (¿por qué justamente la iglesia? Tampoco lo explican), entonces, ¿para qué demonios ponen a un montón de adolescentes a hacer una tarea tan trascendental?, lo peor de todo es que en lugar de mandarlos en su mejor forma, los hacen pasar hambre los días previos supuestamente para que lleguen más feroces. ¿Feroces? Será más bien debilitados y al borde del desmayo, pero como la película es totalmente ilógica, los jóvenes salen como si hubieran consumido esteroides o algún alucinógeno. La historia es simplemente un sinsentido tras otro hasta que llega a su fin.
Y ni hablar del desenlace, predecible y hasta cierto punto, anticlimático. Para ese punto yo ya no esperaba nada de la película y aun así logró decepcionarme.
A pesar de todas las incoherencias, logré mantenerme entretenida con las muertes y lo fantasioso de la premisa. ¿Es una película que me gustaría volver a ver? Por supuesto que no, vamos, no me hubiera gustado verla en primer lugar, sin embargo, no todo fue malo. Tampoco es una película que pueda recomendar, simple y sencillamente, porque la trama carece de sentido y lógica, quizás se pueda disfrutar viéndola de forma muy superficial, pero en el momento en que queramos buscarle una explicación a algo, toda la trama se vendrá abajo. Si aun así que si tienen alguna curiosidad por verla, estoy segura de que encontrarán algo mejor en lo que perder el tiempo.
