Hello, people of the internet! I hope you are well. Yesterday I decided to follow the recommendations of a user, and I decided to watch this movie. I have mixed feelings about the film, since there were some aspects I liked and others I didn't (like the ending or Diane's wrong diagnosis, for example), but we'll go into that later. Without further ado... let's start with this analysis.
¡Hola, gente de internet! Espero que estén bien. Ayer me dispuse a seguir las recomendaciones de un usuario, y decidí ver esta peli. Desde ya, les digo que tengo sentimientos encontrados con la cinta, ya que hubo aspectos que me gustaron y otros tantos que no (como el final o el diagnóstico erróneo de Diane, por ejemplo) pero ya ahondaremos en eso más adelante. Sin más dilación... empecemos con este análisis.
As always, we will discuss aspects such as acting, story, photography (shots, color palettes, lighting), character development and originality. I won't break it down in a specific order but we will go point by point.
Como siempre, hablaremos de aspectos como actuaciones, historia, fotografía (planos, paletas de colores, iluminación), desarrollo de personajes y originalidad. No lo desglosaré en un orden en específico, pero sí iremos punto por punto.
The first things I want to talk about and praise, are the performances, the script and the character development. I'll condense it into a single section since everything has to do with each other.
Lo primero de lo que quiero hablar y elogiar, son las actuaciones, el guión y el desarrollo de personajes. Lo condensaré en un solo apartado ya que todo tiene que ver.
Despite being only two characters in almost the entire film, the development of the story doesn't feel slow, nor does it feel boring or forced. The acting of both actresses is excellent and the development of both through the scripts and the escalating plot twist is phenomenal.
Pese a ser solo dos personajes en casi la totalidad de la cinta, el desarrollo de la historia no se siente lento, ni tampoco aburrido o forzado. La actuación de ambas actrices es excelsa, y el desarrollo de ambas mediante los guiones y el giro que va escalando la historia es fenomenal.
I really liked the fact that they employed an actress who actually has a limiting condition in her legs, and also that Chloe's character isn't the typical crippled girl who depends on everyone for even the smallest thing, but on the contrary, she's a girl who despite her limitations, can be perfectly independent and take care of herself. This was a big plus for the film.
Me gustó mucho el hecho de que emplearan a una actriz que realmente tiene una condición limitante en sus piernas, y también que el personaje de Chloe no sea la típica lisiada que depende de todo el mundo hasta para lo más mínimo, sino que, por el contrario, es una muchacha que pese a sus limitaciones, puede ser perfectamente independiente y cuidar de sí misma. Fue un gran punto a favor de la película.
If we talk about the photography, it's incredible. The cinematographer uses the plans very well, as well as the color palette and shadows. In the daytime scenes, the coloring is opaque, always with a cloudy sky and dull colors (it's a constant resource and typical of thrillers and horror movies). The shots, generally close and closed, give the right sensation of claustrophobia.
Si hablamos de la fotografía, es increíble. El director de fotografía emplea muy bien los planos, al igual que la paleta de colores y sombras. En las escenas diurnas, la coloración es opaca, siempre con el cielo nublado y colores deslucidos (es un recurso constante y propio de los thriller y películas de terror). Los planos generalmente cercanos y cerrados, dan la acertada sensación de claustrofobia.
In the night scenes, there is a good balance between the scarce lights and shadows, since, in spite of being a dark stage, it's perfectly possible to understand what is around (a resource exploited in suspense and horror films but which is a classic and fundamental characteristic of the genre, and in which it's easy to make mistakes in its execution).
En las escenas nocturnas, hay un buen equilibrio entre las escasas luces y sombras, ya que, pese a ser un escenario oscuro, puede perfectamente entenderse lo que está alrededor (un recurso explotado en el cine de suspenso y terror, pero que es un clásico y característica fundamental del género, y en el cuál es fácil cometer errores en su ejecución)
As for the story as such and its originality... let's say that it isn't exactly a story never seen before, however, the way in which it was carried, yes it was original and very good.
En cuanto a la historia como tal y su originalidad... digamos que no es precisamente una historia nunca antes vista, sin embargo, la forma en la que fue llevada sí que fue original y muy buena.
My only point of disagreement with the film, is that they want to address the issue of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, but really, they don't do it in the right way, that is, if we analyze the diagnosis of this disorder, it speaks that the patient who suffers from it feels the anxious need to receive compassion and attention from other people so, their way of doing it's to cause sickness (through various methods) in people close to them, of their own family (almost always children).
Mi único punto en desacuerdo con la cinta, es que quieren abordar el tema del Síndrome de Munchausen Por Poder, pero al final no lo hacen de la manera correcta, es decir, si analizamos el diagnóstico de dicho trastorno, habla de que el paciente que lo padece siente la imperiosa necesidad de recibir compasión y atención de las demás personas por lo que, su manera de hacerlo es causar enfermedades (a través de diversos métodos) en personas cercanas a ellos, de su propio núcleo familiar (casi siempre son hijos).
The attention and compassion received by other people is extremely gratifying, they also develop an unhealthy emotional attachment to the sick person because if they lose them, they would lose their source of attention. This is where their overprotection really lies.
La atención y compasión recibida por las demás personas es en extremo gratificante, además desarrollan un apego emocional insano por la persona enferma debido a que si la pierden, perderían su fuente de atención. Es allí donde realmente radica su sobreprotección.
This being so, in the film we see that Diane does not suffer from this disorder because, although the methods she employs are the same as those of a person with Munchausen's, in order to be related to the disorder, the motive (the why or what she does it for) must be related as well. Diane does not want attention from anyone, as, in the film we see a scene where she talks about her daughter as an independent young woman about to go to college, she does not place her on a weak and dependent plane in order to generate sympathy and empathy for her having to deal with so much. She goes out of her way to make people believe that her daughter is strong, and that she is not against her attending college, this detail already distances Diane from the Munchausen's diagnosis.
Siendo así, en la película vemos que Diane no sufre de este trastorno porque si bien los métodos que ella emplea son los mismos de una persona con Munchausen, para poder tener relación con el trastorno, el móvil (el por qué o para qué lo hace) debe tener relación también, pero Diane no quiere atención de nadie ya que, en la película vemos una escena en la que ella habla de su hija como una joven independiente que está por ir a la universidad, no la coloca en un plano débil y dependiente para poder generar compasión y empatía hacia ella al tener que lidiar con tantas cosas. Se esfuerza en hacerle creer a la gente que su hija es fuerte, y que ella no está en contra de que asista a la universidad (este detalle ya aleja a Diane del diagnóstico del Munchausen).
She is simply a woman who has an unhealthy emotional attachment to the young girl, due to the trauma of the loss of her biological daughter, and she doesn't want to separate from her because she is afraid that she will end up moving away and never see her again, so she resorts to making her sick (especially with the immobility of her legs) to prevent the girl from leaving at some point.
Es simplemente una mujer que tiene un apego emocional insano hacia la joven, debido al trauma de la pérdida de su hija biológica, y no quiere separarse de ella porque tiene miedo de que se termine alejando y no vuelva a verla nunca, para ello recurre a enfermarla (sobretodo con la inmovilidad de sus piernas) para evitar que la muchacha pueda irse en algún momento.
Finally, let's talk about the climax and the end of the movie. Let's go particularly to the scene of Chloe's abduction in the hospital, it's so unbelievable the fact that Diane even disconnected her, unintubated her (as delicate as that is) and to top it all, on the way to the exit, nobody noticed anything strange in the woman who almost ran with a patient in a wheelchair. This scene even seemed absurd to me, since an intubated patient is a care patient who is under constant surveillance. How, even with the cardiac apparatus at zero (clearly what could be interpreted as a cardiac arrest), did the doctors not come to the room with the defibrillator? It makes no sense!
Ya para finalizar, hablemos del clímax y el final de la película. Vayamos particularmente a la escena del secuestro de Chloe en el hospital, es tan poco creíble el hecho de que Diane la desconectara, y que incluso la desentubara (con lo delicado que es eso) que para colmo en todo el camino a la salida, nadie notara nada extraño en la mujer que casi corría con una paciente en silla de ruedas. Esta escena me pareció hasta absurda ya que, un paciente entubado es un paciente de cuidado que tiene una constate vigilancia. ¿Cómo aun con el aparato cardíaco en cero (claramente lo que podrían interpretar como un paro cardíaco) no acudieron los médicos a la sala con el desfibrilador? ¡No tiene sentido!
I know perfectly well that in psychology, there are many times that the victim becomes the victimizer, however, anchoring that ending to Chloe, seemed to me to go too far just to have an ending that wanted to surprise the viewer. I expected Chloe with the newspaper article, to look for her real parents and I don't consider that to be a cliché scene, but something that any person in real life would do, not to say that she would look for her parents to live with her or even live together, but at least to let them know that their lost daughter was alive and well, taking into account that the abduction or disappearance of a loved one is something totally desperate for their relatives.
Se perfectamente que en la psicología, hay muchas veces que la víctima se vuelve victimaria, sin embargo, anclarle ese final a Chloe me pareció llegar muy lejos solo para tener un final que quisiera sorprender al espectador. Yo esperaba que Chloe con el artículo de prensa, buscase a sus padres reales y no considero que eso fuese una escena cliché, sino algo que cualquier persona en la vida real haría, no quiere decir que ella buscase a sus padres para vivir con ellos, o ni siquiera convivir, pero si al menos para que estos supieran que su hija perdida estaba viva y que estaba bien, tomando en cuenta que el rapto o desaparición de un ser querido es algo totalmente desesperante para sus familiares.
In addition, it's also unrealistic that Diane would drink the pills that Chloe administered to her, since it's impossible to force someone to swallow something unless certain techniques are used, and they all require physical strength which we know that Chloe didn't have and furthermore, it would be more than suspicious and would attract the attention of the nurses. Recall that in order to get Chloe to take the meds, Diane had tricked and manipulated her into taking them and so the young woman did so voluntarily.
Además, es también poco realista el hecho de que Diane se bebiera las píldoras que le administraba Chloe, ya que es imposible obligar a alguien a tragar algo, a menos que se usen ciertas técnicas y todas requieren de fuerza física que sabemos que Chloe no tenía y que además, sería más que sospechoso y atraería la atención de las enfermeras. Recordemos que para que Chloe se tomara las medicinas, Diane la había engañado y manipulado para que se las tomara y así la joven lo hacía voluntariamente.
My final rating for this film is 8/10. In general parameters it's a very good movie, not boring at all and with quite well done scenes. It generates the tension it should as it's a thriller and I enjoyed it quite a lot.
Mi valoración final para esta película es de 8/10. En parámetros generales es una muy buena película, para nada aburrida y con escenas bastante bien hechas. Genera la tensión que debe al tratarse de un thriller y la disfruté bastante.

Excelente review, es una buena película con un mal final (a mi juicio) pero la verdad es que las actuaciones estuvieron bárbaras.
No he tenido la oportunidad de ver esta película pero he ido de historias similares en la vida real. Gracias por compartir tu analisis sobre la pelicula, muy detallado. Saludos
Te recomiendo verla si te gustan las películas de este estilo, es realmente buena, a excepción de los puntos que mencioné. Es cierto, en la vida real pasan cosas incluso peores, no por nada existe el dicho "La realidad supera la ficción"
