Hello, people of the Internet. Today I want to talk to you about a film that I haven't seen in a while, Hello Herman, starring Garrett Backstrom and Norman Reedus, is a drama film that wants to put on the table the issue of bullying and school shootings, an existing and popular problem in the United States.

Hoy quiero hablarles de una película que hace bastante no veía, se trata de Hello Herman, protagonizada por Garrett Backstrom y Norman Reedus, es una película de drama que busca poner sobre la mesa el tema del bullying y el tiroteo escolar, una problemática existente y popular en Estados Unidos.
Herman is a boy who, after being constantly bullied, plans a school shooting where he takes on all his classmates. In the course of the film we delve into Herman's feelings and way of thinking as well as that of Lax, his idol who is a journalist with a rather famous potcast. Usually when these events occur, people only point the finger at the perpetrator and the abusers are victimised, this film seeks to expose the other side of the coin and to understand (but not justify) why these children go to such extremes.
Herman es un chico que tras sufrir acoso constante, planea un tiroteo en la escuela, donde acata a todos los compañeros de su curso. En el trascurso de la película profundizamos en los sentimientos y la forma de pensar de Herman, así como también en el de Lax, su ídolo, el cual es un periodista con un potcast bastante famoso. Usualmente cuando estos eventos ocurren, la gente solo señala al perpetrador y los abusadores quedan victimizados, en esta película se busca exponer la otra cara de la moneda y entender (más no justificar) el porqué estos niños llegan a tales extremos.
I have to say that usually the cinematography is the part of a film that catches my attention the most, however in the case of this film it was the structure, story and depth of characters that caught my attention. In terms of structure it has a succession of intercut scenes that explore Lax's past and present, it is so well defined that it is not confusing, you understand perfectly what happens in what timeline, the fact that it is intercut is so that we get to know Lax better as he himself seeks to really know Herman, who is Lax really, who is Herman really, who is Herman really, who is Lax really, who is Herman really? These are questions that are answered throughout the film.
Tengo que decir que usualmente la fotografía es la parte que más llama mi atención en las películas, sin embargo en el caso de esta película fue su estructura, historia y profundidad de personajes lo que llamó mi atención. En cuanto a estructura tiene una sucesión de escenas intercaladas que exploran el pasado y presente de Lax, está tan bien definida que no es confuso, entiendes perfectamente que sucede en que linea de tiempo, el hecho de estar intercalada es con el fin de que conozcamos mejor a Lax, al tiempo que él mismo busca conocer realmente a Herman ¿Quién es Lax realmente? ¿Quién es Herman realmente? Son preguntas que se responden a lo largo de la película.
Herman is the typical boy who ends up dissociating by accumulating abuse and feeling alone because no adult really helps him, although there is a teacher who occasionally helps him, he doesn't really take action, doesn't file a complaint on the boy's behalf with the headmaster, doesn't talk to the boy's mother, etc. Herman is burdened with a troubled family past and this, the lack of friends and the constant bullying is the trigger for him to become a monster and in fact this is how he is portrayed in the news, however, in the news, nobody talks about the bullying he suffered, leaving him as a simple murderer who killed his classmates and teachers in cold blood. As a smart kid at last, and knowing this, Herman sent the video of the shooting to Lax Morales (his idol) for a report where he can explain the other side of the coin.
Herman es el típico chico que termina disociándose al acumular maltrato y sentirse solo debido a que ningún adulto lo ayuda verdaderamente, aunque hay un profesor que de vez en cuando lo ayuda, realmente no toma cartas en el asunto, no pone una queja en nombre del chico en la dirección, no habla con la madre del chico, etc. Herman carga con un pasado familiar turbulento y esto, la falta de amigos y el bullying constante es el detonante para que él se convierta en un monstruo y que de hecho así lo pinten en las noticias, sin embargo, en estas, nadie habla del bullying que sufrió, dejándolo como un simple homicida que asesinó a sus compañeros y profesores a sangre fría. Como un chico inteligente al fin, y sabiendo esto, Herman le envió el video del tiroteo a Lax Morales (su ídolo) para que le haga un reportaje donde él pueda explicarla otra cara de la moneda.
Lax is an investigative journalist whose traumatic past (which I won't say to avoid spoilers, as it's important to know more about his personality) has traumatized him, which is why after seeing the desperation in Herman's words, he decides to travel to the boy's city to interview him. Lax is patient, methodical and intelligent, that's why he hits the nail on the head with his questions, he doesn't waste time and gets to the point, he also knows perfectly how to expose Herman's side from a totally neutral point of view, although at the end, and although he doesn't justify his actions as Herman himself does, he does feel empathy for the boy and understands his motives, one more reason to make the documentary and try to make teenagers and adults aware of the danger of doing or receiving bullying as all those involved (aggressors and victims) ‘could get hurt or even killed.
Lax por su parte es un periodista de investigación cuyo pasado tomentoso (que no diré para evitar spoilers, ya que es importante para conocer más de su personalidad) lo tiene traumatizado, es por eso que tras ver la desesperación en las palabras de Herman, decide en efecto, viajar hasta la ciudad del chico para hacerle la entrevista. Lax es paciente, metódico e inteligente, es por eso que da en el clavo con sus preguntas, no pierde el tiempo y va al grano, además sabe perfectamente como exponer el lado de Herman desde un punto totalmente neutral aunque al final, y aunque no justifica sus hechos como el mismo Herman, si que siente empatía por el chico y entiende sus motivos, una razón más para hacer el documental e intentar concientizar a los adolescentes y adultos sobre el peligro de hacer o recibir Bullying, ya que todos los involucrados (agresores y victimas) podrían salir lastimados o incluso muertos.
In addition to bullying, the film talks about the carrying of weapons in the United States and how easy it is to obtain them. In fact, Herman explains to Lax that he made the bombs himself, that he can find the manufacturing plans on the internet and the materials in hardware stores, and that buying guns on the internet is child's play, that nobody asks if the person buying them is a minor or not, if they have a criminal or psychiatric record, or if they have a permit to carry a gun, just order online and they will arrive at your home and in fact that is what usually happens in these cases of school shootings, either the kids got the guns from their parents (who have so little common sense that they don't leave them in safes) or they get them online, in the end the result is precisely these incidents.
Además del Bullying, la película habla del porte de armas en estados Unidos y lo fácil que es conseguirlas. De hecho Herman le explica a Lax que las bombas las fabricó el mismo, que en internet están los planos de fabricación y en las ferreterías los materiales y que además comprar armas por internet es un juego de niños, que nadie pregunta si quien las compra es menor o no, si tiene antecedentes criminales o psiquiátricos, o si de hecho tiene permiso de porte de armas, solo basta con hacer el pedido por internet y llegarán a tu casa, de hecho es lo que suele suceder con estos casos de tiroteos en escuelas, o bien los chicos consiguieron las armas de sus padres (los cuales tiene tan poco sentido común que no las dejan en cajas fuertes) o las consiguen por internet, al final el resultado es precisamente estos incidentes.
Finally I have to talk about the performances, although you know I love Norman Reedus and I consider him an excellent actor and in fact in this film he did it splendidly, it is Garrett Backstrom who I want to praise because he did it very well, he is smug, serious and supposedly unbreakable but as he participates in the interviews he gives Herman with his performance more and more nuances until we end up seeing a scared, repentant and hurt boy with the system, the ‘justice’ and in general his life. His performance is very moving in every way and he fully embraced his character.
Por último tengo que hablar de las actuaciones, aunque saben que amo a Norman Reedus y lo considero un excelente actor y de hecho en esta película lo hizo de forma esplendida, es a Garrett Backstrom a quien quiero exaltar porque lo hizo muy bien, es ufano, serio y supuestamente inquebrantable, pero a medida que participa en las entrevistas le va dotando a Herman con su actuación cada vez más matices hasta que terminamos viendo a un muchacho asustado, arrepentido y dolido con el sistema, la "justicia" y en general su vida. Su actuación es muy conmovedora en todo punto de vista y abrazó completamente a su personaje.
Finally, I would like to say that it is a highly recommendable film that should not be ignored, it talks about sensitive issues in a very well handled and respectful way, and it also leaves a moral and a very important learning experience.
Para finalizar quiero decir que es una película altamente recomendable que no debería ser ignorada, habla de temas sensibles de una forma muy bien llevada y respetuosa, además deja una moraleja y un aprendizaje bastante importante.
