This post doesn't serve as a review but rather as my reflection on Netflix's "In Search of The Frog Boys" a true crime documentary I had the chance to watch this afternoon. Although the documentary was released in 2019, given my limited time to watch TV, it wasn't until today that I finally had the opportunity to watch it.

Have you ever heard about the disappearance of the "five frog boys" of South Korea? Well "In Search of The Frog Boys" delves into the mysterious disappearance and tragic fate of five young friends from Daegu, South Korea, known as the Frog Boys. The documentary explores the events surrounding the boys' disappearance in March 1991 and the subsequent discovery of their bodies 11 years later. The documentary uses interviews, archival footage, and expert commentary to unravel the perplexing case, raising questions about the investigation's competence and presenting various theories surrounding the boys' fate.

You can find many reviews of this documentary online and on Youtube, but I just want to share my thoughts after watching it.

As a parent, watching this show was an emotional journey. The boys, aged between 9 and 13 when they disappeared, were around the same age as my own kids. The pain of their parents was deeply felt, and it reminded me of the fragility of life and the immense sorrow that comes with unresolved loss.

The documentary vividly portrayed the close-knit community and the happiness the boys brought into their families' lives. The parents' struggles, seen in interviews and scenes of their quest for answers, highlighted the devastating impact of the tragedy. Remarkably, the fathers quit their jobs, rented a truck, and traveled across the country searching for their sons. This relentless pursuit took a toll on their health, leading some to rely on sleeping pills or alcohol to cope with the pain.

One poignant moment in the documentary was when a father shared a dream he had on the first night his son went missing. In the dream, his son was outside the door in the pouring rain, peeking inside before disappearing without a word. And since that night he had trouble sleeping at night because "I was scared that I may encounter my son in my dreams. I felt helpless as a parent. I couldn't see the point in living anymore." 😢

The mystery surrounding the boys' fate remains unsolved until today, but the documentary introduces a disturbing theory involving the military. With a military shooting range near the boys' disappearance site, the theory suggests a high-ranking officer accidentally shot one of the boys during practice. To cover up the accident, the rest of the boys were murdered. I think there is some truth to this theory because the police refused to investigate the military. And the military vehemently denied their involvement. It doesn't make sense to me but we have to understand South Korea's political climate at that time (1991). South Korea was under military-backed rule and power resided within a rigid hierarchy. So if the boys were shot by a high-ranking officer it made sense there was a cover-up...

As a parent, the thought of losing a child is beyond my imagination. The documentary amplifies the compassion I feel for these families as they face endless uncertainty. And the theory about military involvement. I think they had to be involved somehow because one boy was shot in the head and live bullets were found with their remains. Someone was trying to bury the evidence but unfortunately, no one had the power to initiate an investigation.

"In Search of The Frog Boys" isn't just a gripping true crime documentary; it's a stark reminder of the human toll in the aftermath of unsolved mysteries. It left me contemplating the resilience of the families, the weight of their grief, and the unsettling theory of their murder. The documentary's exploration of these things deepened my understanding of the human experience in the face of heart-wrenching loss of a child and the ongoing quest for justice.

Rest in peace, frog boys 🙏

I will add this to my watch list. I like watching crime documentaries. Indeed, it's unimaginable to lose a child. The worst thing a parent have to go through. I hope they will getbthe justice they deserve.

The parents are in their 60s-70s now. Some had passed on joining their sons on the other side. They had sought justice for their sons for more than half of their lives. Despite more than 500 leads, each one proved false, with many turning out to be nothing more than cruel pranks. Adding to the distress, one father was falsely accused by a sleazy psychologist in a shocking incident that left me seething. I chose not to include that in my post though.

Oh what a sad fate for these boys and their families. Life can be so unfair.
