People often talk about how humans have discovered entire planets and galaxies while continuing to ignore much of our seabed. The vastness of the ocean amazes us because we know that it houses incredible treasures and discoveries even though we have no idea which ones and we know that a lifetime will not be enough to see everything. In the same way, I believe that there are two enormous universes that it's impossible to know fully no matter how much we explore them: the depth of the human soul and the creative immensity of mankind.
A menudo se habla de cómo el ser humano ha descubierto planetas y galaxias enteras mientras sigue ignorando buena parte de nuestro lecho marino. La vastedad del oceáno nos maravilla porque sabemos que aloja tesoros y descubrimientos increíbles aunque no tengamos ni idea de cuáles y sepamos que una vida no nos alcanzará para verlo todo. De la misma forma creo que hay dos enormes universos que es imposible conocer a plenitud por más que los exploremos: la profundidad del alma humana y la inmensidad creativa del hombre.
However, knowing the latter does not prevent me from marveling at each new literary and film discovery I make. A few weeks ago, an artistic center here in Santiago de Chile organized a cinema forum about La Jetée, a French short film (more like a medium-length film) from 1962 written and directed by Chris Marker and although I couldn't attend due to problems with agenda, I wrote it down to review it with the curiosity that aroused in me the fact that sixty years later this work is still being talked about, but what is it about? In short, La Jetée is a science fiction story: in the first images we are shown an airport in Paris and a few minutes later the third world war breaks out. The conflict is nuclear and the consequences lead the world to a post apocalyptic scenario in which humans begin to live underground due to radiation on the surface. After a few years, a group of scientists comes to the terrible conclusion that humanity is doomed to extinction and that the only way to save the species is to travel through time.
Sin embargo, el saber esto último no me impide maravillarne con cada nuevo descubrimiento literario y cinematográfico que hago. Hace algunas semanas un centro artístico acá en Santiago de Chile organizó un cine foro sobre La Jetée, un cortometraje (más bien un mediometraje) francés de 1962 escrito y dirigido por Chris Marker y aunque no pude acudir por problemas de agenda, lo apunté para revisarlo con la curiosidad que despertó en mí el hecho de que sesenta años más tarde aún se hable de esta obra, pero ¿de qué trata? en pocas palabras, La Jetée es una historia de ciencia ficción: en las primeras imágenes se nos muestra un aeropuerto en París y a los pocos minutos estalla la tercera guerra mundial. El conflicto es nuclear y las consecuencias conducen al mundo a un panorama post apocalíptico en el que los humanos comienzan a vivir bajo tierra debido a la radiación en la superficie. Después de algunos años, un grupo de científicos llega a la terrible conclusión de que la humanidad está condenada a la extinción y de que el único modo de salvar la especie son los viajes a través del tiempo.
Traveling to the past or the future has been a literary ambition since the days of Jules Verne or H.G. Wells and in this case the solution to our salvation is to send someone to the past to ask for help, or send them to the future to find a solution to the current situation. Since the scientists belong to the winning side of the war, it is the prisoners who are subjected to the experiments that seek to achieve these time travel.
Viajar al pasado o al futuro ha sido una ambición literaria desde los tiempos de Julio Verne o H.G. Wells y en este caso la solución a nuestra salvación está en enviar alguien al pasado para pedir ayuda, o enviarlo al futuro para buscar una solución a la situación del momento. Como los científicos pertenecen al lado vencedor de la guerra, son los prisioneros quienes son sometidos a los experimentos que buscan conseguir estos viajes en el tiempo.
After trying several people and failing, the one chosen to travel through time is our protagonist, whom we had seen as a child in the scene where the war breaks out (that helps us calculate the elapsed time). Then begin the time travel of this man who first goes to the past, but then also talks with human beings from the future, which seems to indicate that there is a solution because if there are humans in the future, then the present is not the end that was thought at the beginning. Although it only lasts 29 minutes, I think the script is very good and it tells what it needs to tell in that time; and another thing that I liked is that although it deals with the survival of the species and time travel, the center of the plot is one of the most beautiful love stories I have seen on the big screen, so we have a powerful Romance-SciFi mix that entertains and moves you to reflection.
Después de probar con varias personas y fracasar, el elegido para realizar el viaje a través del tiempo es nuestro protagonista, a quien habíamos visto como un niño en la escena en la cual estalla la guerra (eso nos ayuda a calcular el tiempo transcurrido). Comienzan entonces los viajes en el tiempo de este hombre que primero va al pasado, pero que luego también conversa con seres humanos del futuro lo cual parece indicar que sí existe una solución porque si hay humanos en el porvenir entonces el presente no es el final que se pensaba al inicio. Aunque sólo dura 29 minutos me parece que el guión es muy bueno y cuenta lo que necesita contar en ese tiempo; y otra cosa que me gustó es que aunque se trata de la supervivencia de la especie y de viajes en el tiempo, el centro de la trama es una de las historias de amor más hermosas que he visto en la gran pantalla, entonces tenemos una poderosa mezcla romance-SciFi que entretiene y mueve a la reflexión.
Now, why is it an experimental piece of work? The issue is that the film is a succession of still images. That is to say, there are no film sequences like in a common movie, but instead we are shown different photographs that tell the story with the help of some sounds, music and a voiceover that narrates the story. That is to say, at the beginning of the sixties Marker made a film as it could have been made forty years before his time, as if today someone decided to make a film with the technology of the seventies or eighties. In my opinion, this simplicity of resources reinforces the experience of the film and the narration whose ending I loved and I found it incredible that this little cinematographic jewel was made sixty years ago, but it was not for nothing that it inspired another classic Science Fiction film with Bruce Willis. and Brad Pitt, 12 Monkeys, which I also recommend.
Ahora bien, ¿por qué es una obra de corte experimental? El tema es que la película es una sucesión de imágenes fijas. Es decir, no hay secuencias fílmicas como en una película común, sino que se nos van mostrando diferentes fotografías que van contando la historia con ayuda de algunos sonidos, música y una voz en off que narra la historia. Es decir, a inicios de los años sesenta Marker realizó una película como la podían haber hecho cuarenta años antes de su tiempo, como si hoy alguien decidiera hacer una película con la tecnología de los años setenta u ochenta. En mi opinión esa sencillez de recursos refuerza la experiencia del film y la narración cuyo final me encantó y me pareció increíble que esta pequeña joya cinematográfica haya sido realizada hace sesenta años, pero no por nada inspiró otro clásico del cine de Ciencia Ficción con Bruce Willis y Brad Pitt, 12 Monkeys, el cual también recomiendo.
Although some speak of a medium-length film in the case of this film due to its duration, the truth is that as I understand it, everything that lasts less than sixty minutes is a short film. I don't remember which was the last short film I saw, but I will definitely see this one again (in fact, I've already seen it twice) because I think it's wonderful and it's an excellent alternative for when you want to see a good and different story and have little time (then, another day, you can see 12 Monkeys). Although it is SciFi, La Jetée talks about the power of memory, the importance of love, war, man's ambition for power and his capacity for destruction and all in less than half an hour and with static photos. Aunque algunos hablan de mediometraje para el caso de esta película por su duración lo cierto es que según tengo entendido, todo lo que dure menos de sesenta minutos es un cortometraje. No recuerdo cuál fue el último cortometraje que vi, pero volveré a ver este sin duda alguna (de hecho, lo vi ya dos veces) porque me parece una maravilla y es una excelente alternativa para cuando quieran ver una historia buena y diferente y tengan poco tiempo (luego, otro día, pueden ver 12 Monkeys). Si bien es SciFi, La Jetée habla del poder de la memoria, de la importancia del amor, de la guerra, de la ambición de poder del hombre y su capacidad de destrucción y todo en menos de media hora y con fotografías estáticas. Sé que es una obra antigua pero en Hive hay una comunidad cinéfila con mucha experiencia, ¿alguno ha visto este cortometraje? ¿hay algún otro que me puedan recomendar? Los leo en los comentarios.

Interesting story and especially the way in which the medium-length film is executed, the truth is I have never seen a film with these characteristics, however, it can be new and appealing, where the narration should be key to keep the attention on the film.

Los cortometrajes siempre han sido trabajos de pasion, de amor al arte y este no es uno menos, luego de lo leido diria que es un trabajo admirable, especialmente al hablar en el lenguaje de las imagenes y no en el de video movil, como suele ocurrir en ocasiones es al experimentar que podemos obtener obras de artes unicas y especiales, un abrazo y saludos Cristian.
