Una violenta historia de horror corporal
I agree with the idea that awards (of movies, records, books) are a bit illogical, how can you compare works that are so different from each other? How to judge the Best director when each one has their own voice, a style, a personality that no other could reflect? However, I like the awards, or rather the list of nominees, because I often discover new names. That's why I like film festivals, especially the ones that go a little beyond the borders of Hollywood.
Estoy de acuerdo con la idea de que las premiaciones (de películas, discos, libros) son un poco ilógicas, ¿cómo poder comparar obras que son tan diferentes entre sí? ¿cómo juzgar al Mejor director cuando cada uno tiene una voz propia, un estilo, una personalidad que ningún otro podría reflejar? Sin embargo, me gustan las premiaciones, o más bien la lista de nominados, porque suelo descubrir nombres nuevos. Por eso me gustan los festivales de cine, especialmente los que van un poco más allá de las fronteras de Hollywood.
Among all these instances, the Cannes Film Festival is undoubtedly one of the benchmarks for European and world cinema. Great films such as Parasite, Taste of Cherry and The Pianist have been awarded in it, but - despite what I said in the first paragraph - some of the films that have won the Palme d'Or (the Festival's highest award) have caused disappointment, or at least some confusion, how could they award Gus Van Sant's Elephant above Lars von Trier's Dogville and Clint Eastwood's incredible Mystic River? I honestly don't get it. As I also do not understand that the winner of the same award in the 2021 edition was the French film Titane, written and directed by Julia Ducournau (who in 2016 showed us Grave, a gory psychological drama with some black comedy in it).
Titane is a strange story. And that is saying little. It begins with Alexia, a girl who, after a traffic accident, has a titanium plate placed on her head. After that brief opening scene, we meet a young Alexia (played by Agathe Rousselle) who shows off the scar on her head, tattoos on her skin, and is dedicated to working as a showgirl in a car salon.
De entre todas esas instancias, el Festival de Cannes es sin duda uno de los referentes del cine europeo y mundial. En él han sido galardonadas grandes películas como Parasite, Taste of Cherry y The Pianist, pero - a pesar de lo que dije en el primer párrafo - algunas de las cintas que se han llevado la Palma de Oro (máximo galardón del Festival) me han causado decepción, o al menos algo de confusión, ¿cómo pudieron premiar la Elephant de Gus Van Sant por encima de Dogville de Lars von Trier y la increíble Mystic River de Clint Eastwood? Sinceramente, no lo entiendo. Como tampoo entiendo que la ganadora del mismo premio en la edición de 2021 haya sido la película francesa Titane.
Escrita y dirigida por Julia Ducournau (quien en 2016 nos mostró Grave, un drama psicológico gore con algo de comedia negra) Titane es una historia extraña. Y eso es decir poco. Inicia con Alexia, una niña a la que, tras un accidente de tráfico le colocan una placa de titanio en la cabeza. Después de esa breve escena inicial, nos encontramos con una joven Alexia (interpretada por Agathe Rousselle) que muestra la cicatriz en su cabeza, tatuajes en su piel y se dedica a trabajar como showgirl en un salón de automóviles.
From the beginning of the film, Alexia's behavior and character seems very strange to us. As well as violent. Because, that has to be said, Titane is a violent movie. There's crime, serial killers, self-harm, lots of nudity, misogyny, attempted rape, a thriller pace, some sci-fi, and what I've seen called body horror (a term I wasn't familiar with). In short, it's an uncomfortable movie to watch.
Desde el inicio de la película, el comportamiento y el carácter de Alexia nos parece muy extraño. Además de violento. Porque, eso hay que decirlo, Titane es una película violenta. Hay crimen, asesinos en serie, auto lesiones, mucha desnudez, misoginia, intentos de violaciones, un ritmo de thriller, algo de ciencia ficción y lo que he visto que llaman horror corporal (término que desconocía). En resumen, es una película incómoda de ver.
However, I think that the greatest discomfort does not come from that amount of violence, but from the lack of a solid plot. In my opinion, Titane tells a story that's too confusing and weird to appreciate. Without making too many spoilers - although perhaps I should prepare you for what you're about to see - after murdering several people and running away from home in what appears to be the murder of her parents, Alexia poses as a boy who has been missing for ten years and when the child's father recognizes her as his son going to live with him (?). Obviously something is very wrong with this man who doesn't realize that Alexia is a woman - no matter how hard she tries to hide it - but what about the others? and the mother of the child? How can a man live every day at home and at work with another person and not realize that he is not who he thinks he is? I didn't buy that and I found it almost as illogical as some of the explicit sex scenes whose key I don't reveal, but in all my movie experience it's the first time I've seen a character have sex the way Alexia does a couple of times in Titane, something original? Maybe, but as aberrational as new to me.
Sin embargo, creo que la mayor incomodidad no viene de esa cantidad de violencia, sino de la carencia de un argumento sólido. En mi opinión, Titane cuenta una historia que es demasiado confusa y extraña como para poder apreciarla. Sin hacer muchos spoilers - aunque tal vez debería prepararlos para lo que van a ver - después de asesinar a varias personas y huir de casa en lo que parece ser el homicidio de sus padres, Alexia se hace pasar por un niño desaparecido hace diez años y cuando el padre del niño la reconoce como su hijo se va a vivir con él (?). Obviamente algo está muy mal en este hombre que no se da cuenta de que Alexia es una mujer - por mucho que lo intente esconder - pero ¿y los demás? ¿y la madre del niño? ¿cómo puede un hombre convivir todos los días en su casa y en el trabajo con otra persona y no darse cuenta de que no es quién él cree? Eso no lo compré y lo encontré casi tan ilógico como algunas escenas de sexo explícito cuya clave no revelo, pero en toda mi experiencia cinematográfica es primera vez que veo a un personaje tener sexo de la forma en que Alexia lo hace un par de veces en Titane, ¿algo original? Tal vez, pero tan aberrante como nuevo para mí.
Now, if there is something I must rescue, it is Agathe Rousselle's performance as Alexia. It's a very strange character and a very bizarre story, but Alexia is convincing and believable throughout thanks to the talent of the actress (who is also a journalist and model), whether it's having sex with a co-worker, murdering an intense admirer or as the androgynous lost son of a bodybuilder firefighter (?). Agathe is a force on screen that makes the viewer - despite everything - unable not to feel some compassion for the monster that Alexia is. The photography is good and the direction is also good, but that script seems very crazy to me. It's an excessive, violent and transgressive film, but not in the best of ways, how could it win the Palme d'Or when it was competing with Ryūsuke Hamaguchi's Drive My Car, Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch and one of my all-time favorite movies The Worst Person in the World by Joachim Trier? After having awarded Parasite in 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic caused the Festival to be suspended in 2020 and when it returns in 2021, do they give the Palme d'Or to Titane? Did the jury forget in a year how and what to recognize in cinematographic matters? If anyone has seen this movie please tell me am I being too harsh against the movie? Is there something I'm missing? Or did it seem as crazy to you as it did to me? I read you in the comments.
Ahora bien, si algo debo rescatar es la actuación de Agathe Rousselle como Alexia. Es un personaje muy extraño y una historia muy bizarra, pero Alexia resulta convincente y creíble en todo momento gracias al talento de la actriz (que también es periodista y modelo), ya sea teniendo sexo con una compañera de trabajo, asesinando a un admirador intenso o como el andrógino hijo perdido de un bombero culturista (?). Agathe es una fuerza en pantalla que consigue que el espectador - a pesar de todo - no pueda no sentir algo de compasión por el monstruo que es Alexia. La fotografía es buena y la dirección también lo es, pero ese guión me parece muy disparatado. Es una película excesiva, violenta y trasgresora, pero no en el mejor de los sentidos, ¿cómo pudo llevarse la Palma de Oro cuando competía con Drive My Car de Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, The French Dispatch de Wes Anderson y una de mis películas favoritas de siempre The Worst Person in the World de Joachim Trier? Después de haber premiado Parasite en 2019, la pandemia del Covid-19 provocó la suspensión del Festival en 2020 y al volver en 2021 ¿le dan la Palma de Oro a Titane? ¿al jurado se le olvidó en un año cómo y qué reconocer en materia cinematográfica? El argumento de la historia es realmente incomprensible, y es lo que le hace realmente atractiva. Yo no podía creerlo cuando la vi el año pasado. Mis posiciones realmente fueron divididas, pero lo extraño es como todos esos elementos se mezclaron. Eso sí, esperaba ver un poco más de sangre. El final es una locura.
Yo también me dividí un poco, sobre todo porque al inicio, a pesar de la violencia, la película tenía buen ritmo y apuntaba a un thriller interesante, pero me perdió en el camino. Y sí, el final es muy loco. Gracias por compartir tu opinión. Saludos.
