More recently, I have watched great productions of the same type, some good examples are The Irishman film and the Peaky Blinders series. A couple of things all of these stories have in common is that they take place decades in the past, and they give big importance to the role of the family in the way these criminals behave.
I was expecting No Sudden Move to be similar to these previous productions, but the truth is, this movie felt short of my expectations for reasons I will explain in depth later in the article. The main characters are low-level criminals, they are simple pawns in a chess move that's being played at a much higher level. Plus, these main characters don't have any important relationship with any family member.
Before watching this film I didn't read anything about it, I simply took a quick look at some of the members of the cast, and that convinced me this film was worth watching. Before explaining my views about the film, I would like to first give a mention to some of the people who worked on it.
Main names associated with the film
The director is Steven Soderbergh. This person has had a very successful career in the entertainment industry and has directed many films over the past 3 and a half decades. Some of the previous movies where he worked as a director are The Laundromat, Unsane, Behind The Candelabra, Contagion, and The Informant!
All of these are great films but I do notice this director despite doing a good job most of the time, can sometimes become unable to produce a film that reaches its top potential. I mention this because I believe some of his films like The Laundromat, Contagion, and No Sudden Move, were very ambitious projects but the final result didn't completely satisfy my expectations. These films were acceptable and worth watching, but they could have been much better.
The writer was Ed Solomon, who is a very experienced writer for films and series. The most popular films where he has previously worked are Men in Black, and the Now You See me trilogy, the third part is yet to be released. He also wrote the original Charlie's Angels movie from 2000.
The cast of the film is spectacular and this was the main reason for my interest in watching it. I was really surprised to see so many good actors participating in this movie. One of the 2 main characters is played by Don Cheadle who is a very well-known guy mainly thanks to his role in the Avengers films but he has also participated in many other good productions such as House of Lies, the Ocean's trilogy, Crash, and many others.
His role in this film is that of a 2-bit criminal that is in search of cash and is, therefore, looking for any job he can find.
The other main character is played by Benicio Del Toro, this is an actor that usually works in crime movies and series, and does a good job with his roles. Some of the most popular productions where he has worked are Sicario, Escape at Dannemora, and 21 Grams. Just like the character played by Don Cheadle, Del Toro also plays a 2-bit criminal and they will be working together in some dirty jobs to earn some cash.

Un par de cosas que todas estas historias tienen en común es que tienen lugar hace décadas y dan gran importancia al papel de la familia en la forma en que se comportan estos delincuentes.
Esperaba que No Sudden Move fuera similar a estas producciones anteriores, pero la verdad es que esta película no cumplió con mis expectativas por razones que explicaré en profundidad más adelante en el artículo. Los personajes principales son criminales de bajo nivel, son simples peones en un movimiento de ajedrez que se juega a un nivel mucho más alto. Además, estos personajes principales no tienen ninguna relación importante con ningún miembro de su familia.
Antes de ver esta película no leí nada sobre ella al respecto, simplemente eché un vistazo rápido a algunos de los miembros del elenco, y eso me convenció de que valía la pena verla película. Antes de explicar mis puntos de vista sobre la película, me gustaría mencionar primero a algunas de las personas que trabajaron en ella.

Uno de los 2 personajes principales lo interpreta Don Cheadle quien es un tipo muy conocido principalmente gracias a su papel en las películas de Los Vengadores pero también ha participado en muchas otras buenas producciones como House of Lies, la trilogía de la Gran Estafa, Crash, y muchas otras.
Su papel en esta película es el de un delincuente de poca monta que busca dinero en efectivo y, por tanto, busca cualquier trabajo que pueda encontrar.
El otro personaje principal lo interpreta Benicio Del Toro, este es un actor que suele trabajar en películas y series de crimen, y hace un buen trabajo con sus papeles. Algunas de las producciones más populares en las que ha trabajado son Sicario, Escape at Dannemora y 21 Grams. Al igual que el personaje interpretado por Don Cheadle, Del Toro también interpreta a un criminal de poca monta y trabajarán juntos en algunos trabajos sucios para ganar algo de dinero.

His character is a criminal of a higher level compared to the previous 2 characters, he is a recruiter and is responsible for giving instructions.
The actor David Harbour also makes an appearance in this film. He recently acted in another well-known film, Black Widow, and in the past, he has worked in other popular productions such as Hellboy, Stranger Things, and The Equalizer. His role is that of an innocent accountant who suddenly finds himself forced to do bad things.
Finally, another important character is played by Jon Hamm. I will always remember this actor for his performance in the Black Mirror episode called White Christmas. He is also well-known for Mad Men, as well as for other good productions such as Tag, Keeping Up with the Joneses, Marjorie Prime, and several others.
Jon plays a detective that's investigating some recent problematic events that took place in a family house. He senses something is going on related to important criminals and is trying to pinpoint what is really happening.
There are a couple of other famous actors but these characters are the key ones for the story. Plus, one of the popular actors that I decided not to mention can be seen as a surprise for some of the viewers, and it wouldn't be the first time this actor appears as a surprise in a major film. I could give one clue about him, his name starts with an "M".
As we can see, this film has many talented people involved, which could justify having high expectations about it. However, the film was far from reaching its potential in my view.
What was the movie about?
The movie begins with one of the low-level criminals being summoned to a meeting to determine if he is willing to do a dirty job. The entire film is about getting a document and then selling it to interested parties.
There are all types of criminals involved in the story, and the main characters are actually the least important of them. The nature of this document isn't revealed until the end of the film, so the viewer will have constant doubts about why it is important. Maybe this is one of the reasons why the film wasn't as good as it should be. Without actually knowing what these people are looking for, everything loses a little bit of interest.

The film was also very slow-paced and it really felt like it lasted more than 2 hours when it actually lasted a couple of minutes less. When a film appears to be getting too long that is always a sign that the film isn't as entertaining as it should be. In my case, the film should have lasted at least 20 minutes less than its length.
Despite so much talent in the cast members, the characters weren't really charismatic with maybe one exception towards the end of the film from a character that was the ultimate boss. It felt like the film wasted a lot of talent, especially from the main actors, and I believe this is a problem caused by the way the story was written. It didn't have a good pace, and the different events felt convoluted.
One good thing about the film is that it does have nice and unexpected twists, but this isn't enough to make the film sufficiently interesting to satisfy my expectations because the majority of the film was kind of boring and a few good moments don't really compensate, although these twists did improve the type of ending it had.
How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?
The cast members have more talent than what they were able to show in this film. The way the story is developed and filmed wasn't of big help for them, and this is why the performances left much to be desired.
I noticed something with Benicio del Toro and it is that he always seems to be drinking while acting. The same happened in the series Escape at Dannemora after they escape the prison, and in this film, I saw him several times drinking as much as he can. Maybe this is a coincidence, or maybe his acting style is conditioned by a real-life addiction to alcohol?
The settings were really nice at least. The story takes place in the 50s and everything from the cars, to the way the people looked, were very appropriated. The camera work was super strange, for some reason, the director decided to use a fish-eye lens which didn't really make much sense and there were no memorable scenes elevated by an original movement of the camera or anything similar. I think this film was a failure for both the director and the writer. It is not an entirely bad film, but the problem is that there were high expectations that weren't fulfilled and a lot of wasted talent in the cast.
Final thoughts
No Sudden Move could have been a great crime film but it turned out to be an easily forgettable one that will leave a feeling of disappointment in some of the viewers. Maybe my expectations for this movie were too high and that could have been counter-productive for my enjoyment. The film isn't entirely bad, but it is important to not expect anything too great from it. With such a good cast it should have been much better.
La película también fue muy lenta y realmente se sintió como si durase más de 2 horas cuando en realidad duró unos minutos menos. Cuando una película parece alargarse demasiado, siempre es una señal de que la película no es tan entretenida como debería ser. En mi caso, la película debería haber durado al menos 20 minutos menos que su duración.
A pesar de tanto talento en los miembros del reparto, los personajes no eran realmente carismáticos con tal vez una excepción hacia el final de la película de un personaje que era el máximo jefe. Parecía que la película desperdiciaba mucho talento, especialmente de los actores principales, y creo que este es un problema causado por la forma en que se escribió la historia. No tuvo un buen ritmo y los diferentes eventos se sintieron complicados.
Una cosa buena de la película es que tiene giros buenos e inesperados, pero esto no es suficiente para hacer que la película sea lo suficientemente interesante como para satisfacer mis expectativas porque la mayor parte de la película fue un poco aburrida y algunos buenos momentos realmente no compensan, aunque estos giros sí mejoraron el tipo de final que tuvo.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la ambientación y el trabajo de cámara?
Los miembros del elenco tienen más talento del que pudieron mostrar en esta película. La forma en que se desarrolla y filma la historia no fue de gran ayuda para ellos, y es por eso que las actuaciones dejaron mucho que desear.
Noté algo con Benicio del Toro y es que siempre parece estar bebiendo mientras actúa. Lo mismo sucedió en la serie Escape at Dannemora después de que escapan de la prisión, y en esta película lo vi varias veces bebiendo todo lo que pudo. ¿Quizás esto es una coincidencia, o quizás su estilo de actuación está condicionado por una adicción al alcohol en la vida real?
La ambientación fue realmente buena al menos. La historia transcurre en los años 50 y todo, desde los autos, hasta el aspecto de la gente, fue muy apropiado. El trabajo de la cámara fue súper extraño, por alguna razón el director decidió usar una lente de ojo de pez que realmente no tenía mucho sentido y no hubo escenas memorables mejoradas por un movimiento original de la cámara o algo similar. Creo que esta película fue un fracaso tanto para el director como para el guionista. No es una película del todo mala, pero el problema es que hubo altas expectativas que no se cumplieron y mucho talento desperdiciado en el elenco.
Reflexiones finales
No Sudden Move podría haber sido una gran película de crimen, pero resultó ser una película fácilmente olvidable que dejará un sentimiento de decepción en algunos de los espectadores. Quizás mis expectativas para esta película eran demasiado altas y eso podría haber sido contraproducente para mi disfrute. La película no es del todo mala, pero es importante no esperar nada demasiado grande de ella. Con un elenco tan bueno debería haber sido mucho mejor.

Creo que tuviste unas expectativas que no se cumplieron , y seguramente a muchos les paso, que esperaban que Steven Soderbergh les ofreciera algo mas cercano a Ocean's Eleven, Erin Brockovich o Magic Mike, películas de su filmografia que se pueden catalogar de mas comerciales y del gusto de la mayoría. En cambio hizo una película mas propia de su estilo menos comercial. A mi me gusto lo suficiente, si le sobran minutos, en eso estoy totalmente de acuerdo, pero todo lo demás me gusto , pero por ser seguidor del estilo del cineasta desde que hizo el film Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Recuerdo que Traffic aunque recibió muchas nominaciones a premios, al publico le pareció muy lenta y pesada. Igualmente la peli Contagio, que es del 2011 pero que muchos descubrieron fue hace un año con la pandemia, en su momento recibió buenas criticas de los especialistas, pero del publico creo que no tanto. No Sudden Move no es lo mejor del cineasta, pero es un buen film fiel a su estilo y done incluso introduce una critica a una industria que era muy poderosa en esa época y que en la vida real hicieron acuerdos similares a los mostrados en el film.
Creo que eso fue justamente lo que pasó, esperaba un film un poco diferente sobre todo porque ha sido muy bien recibido y además es de HBO. De todas formas no me arrepiento de verlo, creo que en general vale la pena y la historia estuvo interesante.
La primera media hora pensé que el director iría por el camino mas digerible para todos, pero luego note que no. Yo disfruto ambas facetas del cineasta, pero es verdad que realmente puede decepcionar a mucha gente.
