When we talk about cartoons, the best classics of children's animation often come to mind. From Dexter's Lab to Powerpuff Girls, and how can we forget the endearing Looney Tunes or series like Nickelodeon's Hey Arnold! Which, in my opinion, are some of the best contributions to the long history of cartoons we consumed as children, and one of the few that really promoted excellent values for kids without falling into the stigma of indoctrinating them, or taking them to an uncomfortable or socially accepted place. In fact, I've decided to do this little post review on Arnold, because from my personal consideration, it is the best animated series I've ever seen; maybe next to Dragon Ball Z.
In this sense, a fact that is not often taken into account regarding "Hey Arnold!", is the overwhelming depth that this children's series has. Clearly, as children, and after having consumed hours and hours of cartoons, we simply could not be able to discern certain creative, rough, raw and above all realistic aspects that this series had. For example, Arnold's relationship with his biological parents. For those of you who have seen it, you may remember that he didn't have them. Therefore, he grew up under the tutelage of his grandparents, who were loving and attentive to him but who were clearly far from what a child really needs (the warmth and companionship of his parents).
Cuando hablamos de dibujos animados, con muchísima frecuencia vienen a nuestra mente los mejores clásicos de la animación infantil. Desde Dexter's Lab hasta Powerpuff Girls, y cómo olvidar los entrañables Looney Tunes o series como "Hey Arnold!", de Nickelodeon. Que en mi opinión, son unos de los mejores aportes que se puedan recordar dentro de la larga historia de cartoons que consumimos siendo niños, y de los pocos, que realmente fomentaban excelentes valores para los chicos sin caer en el estigma de adoctrinarlos, o llevarlos a un lugar incómodo o socialmente aceptado. De hecho, he decidido hacer este pequeño post review sobre Arnold, porque desde mi consideración personal, es la mejor serie animada que jamás haya visto; quizá junto a Dragon Ball Z.
En este sentido, un dato que no se es tomado mucho en cuenta con respecto a "Hey Arnold!", es la abrumadora profundidad que tiene esta serie infantil. Claramente, siendo niños, y después de haber consumido horas y horas de caricaturas, sencillamente no podíamos ser capaces de discernir ciertos aspectos creativos, rudos, crudos y sobre todo realistas que esta serie tenía. Por ejemplo, la relación de Arnold con sus padres biológicos. Que para quienes la hayan visto, podrán recordar que éste no contaba con ellos. Por tanto, creció bajo la tutela de sus abuelos, que eran cariñosos y atentos con él pero que claramente distaban mucho de lo que un niño realmente necesita (el calor y compañía de sus padres).
Likewise, Arnold was not a boy with incredible or out-of-the-ordinary abilities, but rather the opposite. He was quite ordinary, common, average, but with a sense of loyalty and honour that really set the tone for the series. The actions, situations, dilemmas and even the problems he got himself into were defined in many ways by his ability to solve them, and to stay true to himself. Something that is extremely rare to see in children's series. If you think about it, exaggerated fantasy is almost always the most employed element within the world of these series. The main characters enjoy virtues or mythological characters to improve their lives or simply to get out of trouble that may affect them.
Asimismo,, Arnold no era un chico con habilidades increíbles o fuera de serie, sino más bien todo lo contrario. Era bastante ordinario, común, promedio, pero con un sentido de lealtad y honorabilidad que realmente marcaban el rumbo de la serie. Las acciones, situaciones, dilemas e incluso; los problemas en los que él llegaba a meterse se definían en muchos sentidos en la capacidad que este tenía para resolverlos; y en mantenerse fiel a sí mismo. Algo que es sumamente raro de ver en las series infantiles. Si lo piensan bien, la fantasía exagerada es casi siempre el elemento más empleado dentro del mundo de estas series. Los protagonistas gozan de virtudes o personajes mitológicos para mejorar sus vidas o sencillamente, para salir de embrollos que puedan afectarles.
In the case of what we can see in the entire series of "Hey Arnold!", this is far from being the case. While he is also a child, and as such employs his imagination and creativity without limits, the focus of the series is on the interaction of all the characters. Also in the curious exploration of the behaviours of many of Arnold's friends; such as Helga. Who, curiously, is the one who lives by bullying Arnold, but who loves him in complete secrecy. Gerald, his best friend. He is an athletic, noble, intelligent but above all virtuous boy, who is always with him and is an unconditional support for the plot of the series. In addition, he breaks with an important characteristic. He is a friend of the white boy who is the protagonist of the series. This is not a minor fact.
Now, at some point in the post I touched on the part of the characters' personalities and behaviours, and this is key to give a philosophical sense to the series. No one is what they appear to be. Each and every character has a complicated sub-system that makes them what we end up seeing. Like Harold, the bullying, chubby little boy who at first glance could be perceived as someone extremely rough and somewhat violent, but who deep down is just a mummy's boy, who has no peace with himself between the comfort of feeling spoilt by Mummy and maintaining a tough guy image at school, along with his other friends around him.
En el caso de lo que podemos ver dentro de toda la serie de "Hey Arnold!", esto dista mucho de ser así. Si bien, él es también un niño, y como tal emplea su imaginación y creatividad sin límites, el enfoque de la serie está en la interacción de todos los personajes. También en la curiosa exploración del comportamientos de muchos de los amigos de Arnold; como es el caso de Helga. Que, curiosamente, es la que vive haciéndole bullying a Arnold, pero que lo ama en completo secreto. Gerald, su mejor amigo. Es un chico atlético, noble, inteligente pero sobre todo virtuoso, que está con él siempre y es un apoyo incondicional para la trama de la serie. Además, rompe con una característica importante. Es amigo del chico blanco protagonista de la serie. Un dato no menor.
Ahora bien, en algún punto del post toqué la parte de las personalidad y comportamientos de los personajes, y ésto es clave para darle un sentido filosófico a la serie. Nadie es lo que aparenta. Todos y cada uno de los personajes, tiene un complicado sub sistema que hace que sean lo que terminamos viendo. Como Harold, el bravucón y regordete niño que a simple vista podría percibirse como alguien extremadamente tosco y un tanto violento, pero que en el fondo es solo un nene de mamá, que no haya paz consigo mismo entre el confort de sentirse mimado por mami y mantener una imagen de chico rudo en el colegio, junto a sus demás amigos que le rodean.
If we think about it deeply enough, we can see that this series is an ode to thought and, above all, to addressing an issue that not only was not presented in many cartoons of the time, but was completely neglected in almost all the existing cartoons of the time: the simplicity of life. No extraordinary abilities, no magical godparents, no special powers to solve the issues that complicate our existence the most. Even as a child, it is important to learn to think. For this reason, I will always be grateful to "Hey Arnold!"- He was my silent and constant companion when I was a child and identified with him. When I admired him and enjoyed the silence of my room with my walkman and headphones looking at the ceiling...
Y es que, si lo pensamos con suficiente profundidad podemos ver qué esta serie es una oda al pensamiento y sobre todo, a atender una cuestión que no sólo, no era presentada en muchos dibujos animados de la época, sino que era completamente descuidada en casi todos los cartoons existentes del momento: la simpleza de vida. Sin habilidades extraordinarios, ni padrinos mágicos, o poderes especiales que resolvieran las cuestiones que más nos complican la existencia. Incluso, cuando se es un niño, es importante aprender a pensar. Por esta razón, siempre le estaré agradecido a "Hey Arnold!"- Fue mi compañía, silente y constante, cuando yo era un niño y me identificaba con él. Cuando le admiraba y disfrutaba del silencio de mi cuarto junto a mi walkman y audífonos mirando al techo...
Sometimes this tends to happen to us with things related to our childhood; that is, feeling that we are connected to a certain cartoon that we don't really understand. And it's a strange feeling, you know? Because in a way, the things that go around in our heads should surely be a lot less complicated and existentialist than the why of things. Or solving problems between people we love. Or helping another child who is having an even harder time than we are. Understanding the point of view of others without compromising or judging it, is a precious and highly undervalued act of humanity; one that we don't often see on the small screen, and even less so in children's series.
"Hey Arnold!" is the gateway to those cartoons like Ginger (also from Nickelodeon) or MTV's Daria, which are more introspective and give us a glimpse of what life has in store for us, and at the same time, evidence of what really makes us who we are. That attractive component between the psychology of our actions and that incessant need to be surrounded by people who approve of us. Obviously, nothing too intricate not to be appreciated by all children, but tell me, if you could appreciate the contribution of this series, how would you rate it: as one of the bunch that came out in the late 90's; or as exceptional and different in every way? I like the idea of associating Arnold with Jazz, so addictive and at the same time melancholic; worthy of his personality, and a reflection of life itself.
A veces, suele sucedernos esto con cosas relacionadas con nuestra infancia; es decir, sentir que estamos conectados con un determinado dibujo animado que realmente no entiende. Y es un sentimiento extraño, ¿saben? Porque de cierta manera, las cosas que rondan nuestras cabezas, seguramente deberían ser muchísimo menos complicadas y existencialistas, que el por qué de las cosas. O resolver problemas entre personas que queremos. O ayudar a otro niño que la está pasando aún peor que nosotros. Entender el punto de vista de los demás sin comprometerlo ni juzgarlo, es un acto de humanidad precioso y sumamente infravalorado; que no mucho solemos ver en la pequeña pantalla, y menos aún en series infantiles.
"Hey Arnold!" es la entrada a esos cartoons como Ginger (también de Nickelodeon) o Daria, de la MTV, con contenido más introspectivos y que nos adelantan lo que nos espera en la vida, y al mismo tiempo, evidencian sobre lo que realmente nos hace quienes somos. Ese componente atractivo entre la psicología de nuestros actos y esa necesidad incesante de estar rodeados de personas que nos aprueben. Obviamente, nada demasiado intrincado para no poder ser valorado por todos los niños, pero díganme ustedes, si pudieran valorar el aporte de esta serie, ¿cómo la calificarían? ¿Como una más del montón que se estrenaron a final de los 90's; o como una excepcional y diferente en todos los sentidos? Me gusta la idea de asociar a Arnold con el Jazz, tan adictivo y al mismo tiempo melancólico; digno de su personalidad, y un reflejo de la vida misma.
Sigue y seguirá siendo una de las gemas de Nickelodeon por siempre.
Que buenos recuerdos me traes. Hace algunos años atrás, solía haber una página en FB que en las noches, transmitía en vivo todos los clásicos de Nickelodeon, entre ellos Arnold y yo me quedaba un rato viéndolo y recordando el episodio a ver si aún lo mantenía en mis recuerdos.

Una de mis favoritas infantiles, mas que todo por que aunque era una serie infantil, de verdad tocaba temas profundos para su época y tenia una sensación de aventura que pocas series tuvieron antes y despues de ella.
Some time ago I read something about this animated series. I never saw it because it is not of my generation, but I remember that the article said positive things and from what you say, I'm sure it is in the memory of many people who saw it as a child. maybe I'll look for it on the internet to see an episode.

En lo personal me encantan estas caricaturas de antes, Ya que cumplian muy bien con el cometido de entretener y como dices fomentaban valores reales. Las caricaturas de horita solo quieren adoctrinar a los niños a ser homosexuales a la fuerza, o tambien meten politica en las caricaturas, que estos son temas que los niños no enteinden.

Bueno, yo creo que en Hey Arnold! sí se tocan algunas cosas con respecto a la orientación sexual no binaria. También es un tópico importante. Ahhh muchas gracias por escribir esta review, de verdad me llevó muchos años atrás, disfruté cada palabra, no era de mis series favoritas pero sí que me gustaba, recuerdo a Helga y me causaba gracia ver como molestaba al pobre Arnold pero en realidad lo amaba en silencio. Ciertamente esta serie guarda muchísima profundidad en cada uno de sus episodios.
Sobre todo disfruté de tu reflexión final en la que resalto estas líneas "Porque de cierta manera, las cosas que rondan nuestras cabezas, seguramente deberían ser muchísimo menos complicadas y existencialistas, que el por qué de las cosas"
