A finales del año pasado fue estrenada la nueva película animada de Disney, la cual lleva por título Encanto y ya llamaba mucho la atención del público latinoamericano al desarrollarse su historia en Colombia. Tras su estreno, no fue poco lo que se comenzó a hablar de ella, por lo que decidí echarle un ojo a penas se sumó al catálogo de Disney+.
At the end of last year, Disney's new animated movie Encanto was released, and it was already catching the attention of Latin American audiences as its story was set in Colombia. After its release, there was a lot of talk about it, so I decided to take a look at it as soon as it was added to the Disney+ catalog.
De Disney a Colombia
La película se centra en la familia Madrigal, una familia donde cada miembro posee un don mágico que usa para ayudar al pueblo de Encanto. La historia la vivimos desde los ojos de Mirabel, la única Madrigal que no obtuvo ningún don, por lo que crece con la constante necesidad de encontrar su lugar entre sus parientes.
El pueblo en el que vive la familia Madrigal, pese a ser un lugar ficticio, es un pueblo ubicado en Colombia, por lo que toda la película es acompañada por diferentes elementos culturales de dicho país, tanto en sus personajes, su entorno y hasta en la música con una banda sonora totalmente memorable, compuesta por el gran compositor de musicales del momento, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
A partir de este momento, empezaré a incluir spoilers en mi análisis, por lo que asumiré que si sigues leyendo es porque ya has visto la película

From Disney to Colombia
The film focuses on the Madrigal family, a family where each member possesses a magical gift that they use to help the people of Encanto. The story is experienced through the eyes of Mirabel, the only Madrigal who did not get any gift, so she grows up with the constant need to find her place among her family.
The town where the Madrigal family lives, despite being a fictitious place, is a town located in Colombia, so the whole film is accompanied by different cultural elements of that country, both in its characters, its environment and even in the music with a totally memorable soundtrack, composed by the great composer of musicals of the moment, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
From this point on, I will begin to include spoilers in my analysis, so I will assume that if you continue reading it is because you have already seen the movie.
Retrato de una familia discretamente inestable
Durante décadas, la familia Madrigal se ha mostrado como una familia perfecta, alegre y unida, la cual se ha ganado además la admiración de la gente de Encanto, sin embargo, detrás de todo este intento de ser una familia perfecta, se esconden muchos problemas que intoxican a la familia desde adentro.
Sucede que, en su intento por demostrar ser dignos del milagro que les da sus dones, Alma Madrigal, la abuela de la familia, acaba poniendo la inmensa responsabilidad de actuar de determinada manera a todos sus hijos y nietos, impidiéndoles ser ellos mismos, generando diversos complejos en ellos y, sin darse cuenta, haciéndoles la vida más difícil.
Por hacer un recuento, Bruno, cuyo don lo convertía ocasionalmente en pájaro de mal agüero, acaba recibiendo rechazo constantemente; Pepa, cuyo don se vincula tan directamente con sus sentimientos, acaba por obtener la agotadora obligación permanente de reprimir sus emociones y Julieta, con su don para curar las heridas, carga con la responsabilidad de cuidar de los demás, pues nadie como ella podrá sanar lo que está roto (Quizás el menor "trauma" hasta ahora, pero sí una característica notable en su personalidad preocupada). Pasando a los hijos de Julieta, Luisa crece con la sensación de que su valía depende de su fuerza física, Isabela asume la responsabilidad de cumplir con las expectativas de su abuela y, finalmente, Mirabel, crece con el constante sentimiento de que no es digna de su familia ni del amor de su abuela.
Por parte de los hijos de la tía Pepa y Félix, la película realmente no llega a centrarse en ellos lo suficiente como para conocerlos a profundidad, reduciéndose a tenerlos como personajes secundarios, pero sin llegar a estar realmente excentos de los problemas de la familia. De hecho, personalmente, creo que hubiera sido interesante ver cómo a Dolores le hubiera podido afectar su don a lo largo de su vida, al tratarse de un don tan complicado como el de escuchar cientos de veces más que la mayoría, haciendo que probablemente muy seguido escuche cosas que no debería escuchar, cosas que no querría oír, además de tener que filtrar todas las conversaciones que oye a la vez y, finalmente, crecer escuchando la voz de su tío desaparecido sin entender realmente porqué le escucha (Un punto de hecho bastante extraño de la trama y quizás una de las cosas que dificultaría adentrarse más en él).
A medida que la historia impulsa a Mirabel a dar un recorrido entre los miembros de la familia para encontrar pistas de qué amenaza la magia, la impulsa también a generar comunicación con sus hermanas mayores, permitiéndoles desahogarse y expresar sus problemas, así como también logra conocer a Bruno y su versión de la historia detrás de su partida.
Finalmente, la confrontación y reconciliación entre Mirabel y su abuela Alma, genera como mensaje la necesidad de tener comunicación sincera en la familia, así como la importancia de ponerse en los zapatos de los demás, otorgar libertad a cada quien sobre sus vidas y no cargar a los demás con los traumas personales, por más buenas que sean las intenciones.
Lo curioso de esta historia y su mensaje, es que más allá de dones mágicos, el cuadro es tal cual lo que sucede en una gran cantidad de familias en la vida real, donde el poco interés en entender a los demás acaba generando malestares que corroen desde dentro y dañan a la familia lentamente, sin que nadie note siquiera que hay un problema ocurriendo en la relación familiar, al permanecer todos constantemente en buenos términos y compartiendo juntos dejando los problemas de lado.

For decades, the Madrigal family has shown itself as a perfect, happy and united family, which has also earned the admiration of the people of Encanto, however, behind all this attempt to be a perfect family, many problems are hidden that intoxicate the family from within.
It happens that, in their attempt to prove themselves worthy of the miracle that gives them their gifts, Alma Madrigal, the grandmother of the family, ends up putting the immense responsibility of acting in a certain way to all her children and grandchildren, preventing them from being themselves, generating various complexes in them and, without realizing it, making their lives more difficult.
To make a count, Bruno, whose gift occasionally turned him into a bird of ill omen, ends up receiving constant rejection; Pepa, whose gift is so directly linked to her feelings, ends up getting the exhausting permanent obligation to repress her emotions and Julieta, with her gift to heal wounds, bears the responsibility of taking care of others, since no one like her will be able to heal what is broken (Perhaps the least "trauma" so far, but a remarkable feature in her preoccupied personality). Moving on to Julieta's children, Luisa grows up with the feeling that her worth depends on her physical strength, Isabela assumes the responsibility of fulfilling her grandmother's expectations and, finally, Mirabel, grows up with the constant feeling that she is not worthy of her family nor of her grandmother's love.
As for Aunt Pepa and Felix's children, the film doesn't really focus on them enough to get to know them in depth, reducing them to secondary characters, but they are not really exempt from the family's problems. In fact, personally, I think it would have been interesting to see how Dolores could have been affected by her gift throughout her life, as it is a gift as complicated as listening hundreds of times more than most, making her probably often hear things she should not hear, things she would not want to hear, besides having to filter all the conversations she hears at once and, finally, grow up hearing the voice of her missing uncle without really understanding why she hears him (A rather strange point of fact of the plot and perhaps one of the things that would make it difficult to go deeper into it).
As the story prompts Mirabel to take a tour among the family members to find clues as to what the magic threatens, it also prompts her to generate communication with her older sisters, allowing them to vent and express their problems, as well as getting to know Bruno and his version of the story behind his departure.
Finally, the confrontation and reconciliation between Mirabel and her grandmother Alma, generates as a message the need to have sincere communication in the family, as well as the importance of putting oneself in the shoes of others, giving freedom to each one about their lives and not burdening others with personal traumas, no matter how good the intentions may be.
The curious thing about this story and its message, is that beyond magical gifts, the scenario is just like what happens in a great number of families in real life, where the lack of interest in understanding others ends up generating discomfort that corrodes from within and damages the family slowly, without anyone even noticing that there is a problem occurring in the family relationship, as everyone remains constantly on good terms and spending time together, leaving the problems aside.
El encanto de la familia Madrigal
En Encanto, tanto los personajes más protagónicos como los más secundarios de la familia, destacan y se ganan el cariño del espectador gracias a su autenticidad, y es que no se me ocurre ningún personaje de la familia que sienta que pueda pasar bajo la mesa.
Para empezar, podríamos hablar de los secundarios, donde personajes como el tío Félix y Camilo resaltan con su humor, personajes como la tía Pepa y Dolores destacan con su personalidad o Antonio que, como la mayoría de los niños de su edad en estas películas, se ganan al público con su dulzura infantil. Por adentrarnos un poco más, tenemos personajes como Julieta, quien puede recordarnos en más de una ocasión al comportamiento de muchas madres latinoamericanas, pero finalmente, vienen los personajes más profundos de esta historia.
Para mí, un punto clave en esta película es la escena de la canción "En lo Profundo" sobre el personaje de Luisa, donde se muestra al espectador el tipo de problemas que se estarán afrontando en la trama, así como la forma en que empezaremos a descubrir el interior de los miembros de esta familia. La canción de Luisa es, desde mi perspectiva, una de las mejores canciones compuestas para esta película, pues refleja perfectamente la carga que soporta su intérprete, así como nos permite realmente visualizar el mundo y su familia desde su perspectiva.
Isabela es otro personaje bastante interesante de analizar. La primera vez que vi la película, sentí que su reconciliación con Mirabel había sido algo forzada y que ninguna de las dos tenía interés real desde el inicio en hacer las paces, sin embargo, aunque sigo pensando que eso hubiera podido tratarse mejor, su escena sí permite que, de una u otra forma, se genere la comunicación entre ellas que debía ocurrir para que el personaje de Isabela se desarrollara, así como el de Mirabel al encontrar la raiz de los problemas de su hogar.
Bruno también es un personaje importante para el desarrollo de esta historia, permitiendonos ver otro tipo de consecuencias del trato que reciben los hijos de Alma Madrigal, en este caso resultando en el hijo que acaba por fugarse del hogar, no por falta de amor hacia su familia, sino por el constante sentimiento de ser un problema para ésta.
Finalmente, Alma Madrigal, a pesar de ser responsable de las fracturas de su hogar (tanto metafóricas como literales), también es un personaje completo y profundo, sin ningún tipo de malicia detrás de su comportamiento, sino un gran temor basado en sus propias vivencias, tal como ocurre en la vida real en gran cantidad de familias, pues la incomprensión hacia sus hijos no está necesariamente vinculada con algún tipo de desprecio, sino con el desconocimiento de un problema y el fallido intento de hacer las cosas bien de otra manera.
The charm of the Madrigal family
In Enchantment, both the leading and supporting characters of the family stand out and gain the viewer's affection thanks to their authenticity, and I can't think of any character in the family that I feel could pass under the table.
To begin with, we could talk about the supporting cast, where characters like Uncle Felix and Camilo stand out with their humor, characters like Aunt Pepa and Dolores stand out with their personality or Antonio who, like most of the children of his age in these films, win over the audience with his childish sweetness. To go a little deeper, we have characters like Julieta, who can remind us in more than one occasion of the behavior of many Latin American mothers, but finally, come the deeper characters of this story.
For me, a key point in this film is the scene of the song "Surface Pressure" about Luisa's character, where the viewer is shown the kind of problems that will be faced in the plot, as well as the way we will begin to discover the interior of the members of this family. Luisa's song is, from my perspective, one of the best songs composed for this film, as it perfectly reflects the burden its performer bears, as well as allowing us to really visualize the world and her family from her perspective.
Isabela is another character that is quite interesting to analyze. When I first saw the film, I felt that her reconciliation with Mirabel had been somewhat forced and that neither of them had any real interest from the start in making amends, however, while I still feel that this could have been handled better, her scene does allow, in one way or another, the communication between them that needed to happen for Isabela's character to develop, as well as Mirabel's in finding the root of the problems in her home.
Bruno is also an important character for the development of this story, allowing us to see another type of consequences of the treatment that Alma Madrigal's children receive, in this case resulting in the son who ends up running away from home, not for lack of love for his family, but for the constant feeling of being a problem for his family.
Finally, Alma Madrigal, despite being responsible for the fractures in her home (both metaphorical and literal), is also a complete and deep character, without any malice behind her behavior, but a great fear based on her own experiences, as it happens in real life in many families, because the lack of understanding towards her children is not necessarily linked to some kind of contempt, but to the ignorance of a problem and the failed attempt to make things right in another way.
La música de Lin-Manuel Miranda
Desde que en el 2015 fue estrenado el musical histórico Hamilton, el nombre de Lin-Manuel Miranda no ha dejado de sonar, pues el éxito de dicha obra impulsó su carrera y lo llevó a participar como actor en películas como *Mary Poppins Regresa, componer las canciones de Moana de Disney o incluso dirigir su propia película Tick, Tick, BOOM! (La cual reseñé hace pocas semanas).
La música de Encanto es el más reciente éxito de Miranda, su relación con la música latina en su vida se hace presente en este trabajo para acompañar el ambiente colombiano de la película en su música, además de reflejar perfectamente con las emociones de sus escenas y sus intenciones, tal como mencioné que ocurre en "En lo Profundo".
Un punto positivo de las canciones de Encanto es que, a diferencia de una gran cantidad de películas musicales, las canciones de esta película no hacen de pausa en la historia para expresar el sentimiento que quieren expresar, sino que en su lugar, permiten a la historia progresar junto con la canción, así como sus letras se vuelven indispensables para entender la película.
Sería imposible hacer una sección en esta reseña para la música de la película, sin hacer mención al gran éxito de la misma: "No Se Habla De Bruno", canción que se ha convertido en el mayor éxito en varios años de Disney, superando el éxito de la famosa "Let It Go" de Frozen, alcanzando el puesto #1 en la lista de Billboard en Estados Unidos y siendo cantada y tarareada por millones de personas en el mundo (incluyéndome).
"No Se Habla De Bruno" resume bien la personalidad de esta película, con su letra pegadiza, su ritmo latino, su forma de mostrarnos a la familia Madrigal y su historia progresando durante la canción (Nos permite entender el papel de Bruno en la familia mientras la trama avanza desde el misterio de su visión hacia la propuesta de Mariano).
Como mención curiosa, nótese que en la parte de Dolores ya se podía ver a Bruno caminando en el fondo de la casa, así como moviéndose al ritmo de la canción que escribieron en su contra, todo esto desde antes de que se revelara su presencia en la película.
También puedo hacer mención a las canciones "Colombia, Mi Encanto" y "Dos Oruguitas", interpretadas por los cantantes colombianos Carlos Vives y Sebastián Yatra respectivamente, siendo la primera canción perfecta para adentrarse en el ambiente colombiano de la película (Con Carlos Vives como elección perfecta para interpretarla) y la segunda una hermosa canción perfecta para acompañar el punto clímax de esta película.
The music of Lin-Manuel Miranda
Since the historical musical Hamilton was released in 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda's name has not stopped being heard, as the success of that work boosted his career and led him to participate as an actor in films like *Mary Poppins Returns, compose the songs for Disney's Moana or even direct his own film Tick, Tick, BOOM! (Which I reviewed a few weeks ago).
The music of Encanto is Miranda's most recent success, his relationship with Latin music in his life is present in this work to match the Colombian mood of the film in his music, as well as perfectly reflecting with the emotions of his scenes and his intentions, as I mentioned happens in "Surface Pressure".
A positive point about the songs in Encanto is that, unlike a lot of musical films, the songs in this film do not pause the story to express the feeling they want to express, but instead, allow the story to progress along with the song, just as its lyrics become indispensable to understand the film.
It would be impossible to make a section in this review for the film's music, without making mention of the film's big hit: "We Don't Talk About Bruno", a song that has become the biggest hit in several years for Disney, surpassing the success of the famous "Let It Go" from Frozen, reaching #1 on the Billboard chart in the United States and being sung and hummed by millions of people around the world (including me).
"We Don't Talk about Bruno" sums up the personality of this movie well, with its catchy lyrics, its Latin beat, its way of showing us the Madrigal family and its story progressing during the song (It allows us to understand Bruno's role in the family as the plot progresses from the mystery of his vision to Mariano's proposal).
As a curious mention, note that in Dolores' part, Bruno could already be seen walking in the background of the house, as well as moving to the rhythm of the song they wrote against him, all this from before his presence in the film was revealed.
I can also mention the songs "Colombia, Mi Encanto" and "Dos Oruguitas", performed by Colombian singers Carlos Vives and Sebastián Yatra respectively, being the first song perfect to get into the Colombian atmosphere of the movie (with Carlos Vives as the perfect choice to perform it) and the second a beautiful song perfect to accompany the climax of this movie.
En conclusión
Recuerdo haber tenido la posibilidad de ir a ver Encanto en cines y haber optado por otra película por el poco interés que le tenía a ésta, al pensar que sería sólo otra animación más de Disney sin mucho que ofrecer, lo cual fue un prejuicio totalmente errado pues ahora que la he visto, puedo decir que disfruté muchísimo esta película, su ambiente, su historia, su familia y su mensaje.
Encanto es definitivamente una película que recomendaría y que resalta entre las recientes animaciones de Disney. Si ya la has visto, te invito a contarme tu opinión en los comentarios.
In conclusion
I remember having the chance to go watch Encanto in theaters and opting for another movie because I didn't have much interest in it, thinking it would be just another Disney animation without much to offer, which was a totally wrong prejudice because now that I have seen it, I can say that I really enjoyed this movie, its atmosphere, its story, its family and its message.

Muchas gracias por el artículo y por el buen resumen del tema. No he visto la película (suelo huir de películas con magia y ese tipo de temática), pero sí me ha gustado lo que comentas sobre las difíciles relaciones familiares. Es interesante que, a diferencia de los amigos o de la pareja, el resto de relaciones familiares no son elegibles, sino impuestas por la propia naturaleza. Quizá de ahí su intensidad y su difícil gestión.
