The Gentlemen | It started off so strong!

Ahhhh, don't you just love it when a new series comes online and you just know you want to watch and binge it for the entire season! That was exactly how my first entounter with the fresh series 'The Gentlemen' was recently. Not the movie from 2019, but the series from this year. And yes, they have a lot in common with each other, but I am talking about the series here.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and also with Vinnie Jones in there who was als in Snatch and Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels with also having the elements of boxing and 'pikeys' in there, you immediately had a lot of Snatch vibes thrown at you.

Also Theo James who plays the main character Edwin (Eddie) was a familiar face from White Lotus season 2. Nice line up all together I would say!

Warning: the rest of this blog may contain more spoilers than you would like!

The story short

The story is about Edwin who is the son of a British lord and after his father dies he inherits the whole manor and lands, despite that he is second in the bloodline. Quickly after you find out that one of the reasons that the manor has been doing well is because of that there is a gigantic weed operation in the barn which brings in a lot of cash per year.

All of a sudden Edwin is part of the weed empire and he is growing into his new role with all of the new challenges coming towards him. His partner in crime is Suzie Glass (played by Kaya Scodelario) who takes care of more of the weed business. Together they run into all kinds of stories where the main topic is that Edwin wants to get out of the business.

During the first episode we also meet Edwin brother who is coke addicted loose projectile who plays his role more than annoyingly. So far so good in the first episodes and I literally had laugh out loud more than once.

Curious for what else there is to come!

But later on...

During the season the story plots seem to be getting thinner, and all kinds of people are being dragged into the story which doesn't make it all that easy to understand. On the other hand, even if you miss a piece because you are doing something else it doesn't really matter.

What does happen is that the episodes are starting to get more and more predictable which truly is a pity, because the serie started off so fantasticly strong!

NPO

I would even say that the last episodes where everything 'comes' together feel more of a bit like a drag and that was not how it had started at all. It even feels enough left open that there might even come a sequel to the story.

Would I watch it? Yeah probably still, but that might all be singlehandedly because Theo James is so damn hot with his accent in the series, hahaha.

I am curious what you guys think of it!

Looks like Guy Ritchie to me 😁

Only he's moved from the crime aristocracy to the aristocracy with their chiselled features and sartorial elegance. Can't complain with Theo James, Vinnie and Ray adding to the ambience. I do think, though, a lot of the appeal is nostalgia for a time that is well passed.

Had a sudden memory of Get Carter (1971) - caught my attention from the very first clip on a film review programme we used to have here back in the 70s and lives up to itself every time I see it. Anyway, there's a toff in that, up to no good, but less pretty and much more gritty.

This I totally agree with, although I could imagine there are still some lords living on their lands like this.

Get carter?? This is new to me..gonna check out what you mean!

still some lords living on their lands like this

I was thinking more of the crime fraternity 😁

Get Carter

Seminal film!

It was awesome! I just finished it a few days ago. I always enjoy Guy Richie's stuff.

same here! The Guy Ritchie stamp on it makes it a good sauce spread over.
Did you find the level of the story as high every episode?

Agreed! Yeah, I felt it was pretty high for each episode.
