(Sinopsis: Netflix )

Hello everyone, I hope you are having an excellent day, Today I would like to resume my publications with a bit of Drama, and that is why I bring you this movie which besides being full of funny moments, it is also full of very sad moments, and even some where empathy makes us think if it is really fair everything that happens to the protagonist.

The Terminal, a 2004 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks, is a movie that tells us the story of a fictional character named Viktor Navorski, a person born in Krakozhia (Кракожия), a country that, while not real, is largely inspired by some European country similar to a former Soviet Republic.

Viktor was traveling to the United States when in his country there was a coup d'état by a rebel group, and when he landed at the U.S. airport he was informed that, as his country was at war, his visa was suspended, so not only could he not enter the United States officially, but he could not return to his country of origin.

Viktor, on top of everything else, does not understand the language, so it is even more difficult for him to understand his current situation. He is lost, in an unknown place, with no help, no one, and if all that were not enough, he can't get out of there. In that situation anyone would lose their mind, and if it weren't for his ability to cope with problems, his world would come crashing down on him.

I would like to make a parenthesis here to tell you the story of Merhan Karimi Nasseri, a person who served as an inspiration when writing the script since, like our protagonist, he lived in an airport, although he lived for 18 years in the Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport.

Merhan was an Iranian refugee who lived in the departure lounge of Terminal 1 of the Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport from August 8, 1988 until July 2006, in fact, if it had not been for health complications he would not have managed to leave, since he had to be hospitalized and therefore he was approved to enter the country, in order to transfer him to a health center. The story of how he was trapped in the airport is somewhat extensive, and quite curious, but to summarize a little we will say that he was a student abroad, who protested against the Shah of Iran being outside his country, at one point he had to return because the income for his studies were stopped, and according to his own words he was kidnapped by the Iranian secret police and tortured for more than four months, after this he was expelled from the country, being in exile, His idea was to return to Europe and ask for asylum in Berlin, but he was rejected, he asked for asylum in many countries and they all rejected him, so he lived as an immigrant in many places, four years after the incident he was approved his request for asylum in Belgium, and there he lived until he decided to move to the United Kingdom, on his trip he was assaulted and lost not only his belongings, but also his identification documents and, of course, the documents proving his refugee status. Nasseri managed to catch the plane to Heathrow, but being unable to prove his identity he was sent on a return flight to Charles de Gaulle, where being unable to prove his origin, his identification or his status he was unable to enter or leave the country. From here on things became complicated, as much fuss was made about the matter and the court in charge of ruling what would happen to Nasseri ruled that he could not be expelled from the country, as it was proven that he entered as a refugee, because of previous records, but the court could do nothing to make the French State give Nasseri refugee status or at least a transit permit, and without those documents Nasseri remained in an irregular state inside the airport terminal building.

Once we know the original story we can guess what the direction of the film will be, but let me tell you about it. Viktor finds himself in an airport, surrounded by people, bewildered, disoriented and having to precariously solve his basic needs (bathing, sleeping, eating or even getting a job), and most important of all: without any answer regarding his situation, his country of origin or his entry to the United States.

vlcsnap-2022-02-12-03h34m16s960.png

For many this would be something horrible and unbearable, something extremely demoralizing and degrading, and although I do not want to say that it was not so for our protagonist, he managed to cope with all this. How was he able to endure this situation? Basically because of two factors, the first was the bonds formed with other people, he relied on the friendships he made with airport employees. And the second important factor was love, responsibility and keeping his word by keeping the promise he made to his father. What promise did he make? We'll talk about that in a moment.

The story goes in a progressive way, being a roller coaster of sensations and peculiar situations that our protagonist has to live, his situation has him between a rock and a hard place and whoever is in charge at the airport does not want to make his life easy, they offer him solutions like an extradition, but Viktor refuses, since he needs to enter the United States, he cannot leave there without fulfilling his task, the reason why he traveled initially, he needs to fulfill a promise and he will not leave there without achieving it. This makes the supervisors very angry because, although the official is scrupulous and can not afford to turn a blind eye to the situation or allow him access, he is not interested in Viktor to solve his problem, in fact he only wants to harm him so that he accepts the only solution proposed, or that he decides to leave the airport without the designated authorization and can imprison him for violating international agreements and enter illegally.

All the bureaucracy he has to go through in this situation is rather worrying, but Viktor's situation is worse than anyone could think, he practically finds his hands tied, without food, without a decent place to sleep, without a place to stay, and without the possibility of even getting a job inside the airport. The good part is that Viktor manages to maintain life in the terminal, befriends the employees, who try as much as possible to help him at least find a quiet place to rest, give him free meal tickets and make his stay slightly more pleasant. Viktor becomes close to a stewardess and because of the language barrier he does not manage to explain his situation very well and tells her that he "practically lives there", to which she assumes that he is a businessman or something similar and for this reason he travels often, an excuse that would be reasonable to meet him every time at the airport.

vlcsnap-2022-02-12-04h24m04s691.png

I remember seeing the film for the first time when I was very young, and personally I was very affected by the bitter tragedy that our protagonist lives and I could not help but empathize with him. It seemed that life put him one barrier after another, everything was problems and they all piled up in a row, every time he thought he was overcoming one, a bigger, more complicated one appeared, and if that wasn't enough, the airport supervisor seemed to have the intention of making everything much worse.

If Viktor found something to lean on, he would try his best to make it not so. Viktor found a way to make a couple of coins by collecting the trolleys to transport the suitcases, after two days they put a person in charge of collecting them, thus taking away Viktor's income. After this he got a job at the construction site, to redo a couple of bathrooms and a waiting room, and the supervisor called the construction manager to threaten to report him, because he was giving employment to a person who is illegally in the country, without any legally issued work permit, treating him in the worst possible way and making it clear that, as long as he was there, he would never get anything.

Viktor in spite of all adversity stood up, always with a positive attitude, with a smile and with his head held high, always keeping in mind his main goal, to fulfill the promise he made to his father... And speaking of the promise, let me tell you about it. Viktor's father was a Jazz fan, and Viktor promised him before he died that he would get the autographs of every one of his father's favorite musicians, in fact, he had gotten all but one, and the latter was in New York, the main reason for his trip.

I apologize if I am not able to explain the movie very well, I am writing this article with tears in my eyes because I have just seen the movie again, besides I would not like to give too many details so as not to give spoilers, or ruin the movie for you. I told you about the promise that Viktor kept, but personally I feel that it is not that important, not as important as the relationships that Viktor has in the terminal, the difficult moments, the sacrifices and the abuse he suffers from the higher authority.

I think the biggest spoiler I can give is that the ending is so satisfying that it is impossible for me to hold back the tears, I don't know if they are of happiness because of all the empathy or relief because things finally turn out well, but it is a genuine feeling of joy (Spoiler, yes. Like every Hollywood movie there is a happy ending).

While the film wrongly tries to romanticize that the USA privileges compassion, trying to show us how in the end everything turns out in favor of our main character and how everyone at the airport cares about him, his well-being and his situation, the message I got was how incredibly cruel a person can be who practically has the power of others, how they are able to trample someone who is on the ground, with no ability to get up at all. In fact, every cruel act that was exerted against Viktor hurt me a little, and I think it's the only movie I've ever cried in my entire life. I recently watched it on Netflix, and from the moment it started I felt a lump in my throat, as the feeling was the same as the first time I watched it.
