As I haven't played any of the main games I don't know many of the references in the series, but the most characteristic I saw was that they showed the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats system and the classic Nuka Cola.
Oh, I'm sure most insider references went totally over my head too. There were supposed to be some hidden "easter eggs", but not only have not noticed them, but even when I read about them they didn't make any sense to me. That's what happens if one hasn't played the games. I did notice Nuka Cola though!
