There are a lot of good movies and shows getting released on a regular basis that it's impossible to properly keep track of them all. For someone like me, I like to keep a note of movies that I would love to watch in the near future but sometimes many movies just remain on the list as I go ahead to see newer ones. One of the reasons why I may just hear of a movie and immediately move to see it is if I recognize an actor or actress in it. This is exactly what happened in the case of the movie "Men".
I discovered the actress Jessie Buckley after watching "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", which was a weird movie that was surprisingly not too bad. Because of how good the actress was, I decided to check out her recent feature work, "Men". Of course "I'm thinking Of Ending Things" was a whole different movie so I did not expect Men to be similar to it. Nevertheless, I still wanted to see it especially given the fact that movie is horror.
Anyway, as a horror fan, I saw this movie alone a few nights before and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Now I'm going to unload some of that horror on you my awesome readers :)

The story revolves around a woman called Harper, who witnesses her husband, James, fall to his death and is traumatized by the experience. To escape her tough reality, she rents a home in another town for vacation. At first everything seems to be going just fine but then she starts getting haunted by the memories of her late husband. It is revealed that James and Harper had a very rocky marriage and were at the brink of separation before James died. Already with a lot of grief, Harper feels a lot of guilt too.
In the movie, it turns out that Harper's mind isn't the only thing that is messed up as she quickly finds out. If you watch the trailer, it isn't much of a spoiler if I mention that all the men in the town Harper finds herself have the same face. Eventually, Harper finds herself in a very awkward and disturbing situation with some of these men and must fight to survive.
Will Harper be able to escape this town alive? Will she be able to face her demons?

Before I saw Men, I saw a clip where the director, Alex Garland, mentioned that the film was inspired by the anime series Attack on Titan. Because I am a huge Attack on Titan fan, this admission is probably what made me check out this movie almost immediately. After seeing it I could point out some "resemblance" especially in the nudity and weirdness aspects. The best way I can think of to describe this movie is to say that it's really... something.
To say it bluntly, Men is a very weird movie with disturbing visuals. I am beginning to associate Jessie Buckley with weird movies not because she is a bad actress but because the two movies I have seen her star in are very strange films. In fact, Jessie Buckley is a really good actress that does really well to embody the character of Harper and embrace the weirdness of the entire story. I absolutely love that in this movie she got to show her Irish accent which for me made her character more genuine and attractive. I'll talk a little bit more about the character of Harper later but for now let's talk about the movie in general.
Before you rush in like I did to see this movie just have in mind that it is anything but a straightforward horror film. Sure it starts out with that creepy and mysterious vibe but it gets weirder and weirder up until the end. You will watch this movie and be left hanging or with the "what the (bleep)" feeling but that's the thing with films like these, they always require the viewer to digest what they just watched and decipher what the story is all about.

You can classify Men as a horror film just by the very disturbing visuals and the way the story is presented but it goes way deeper than that. I am not a film or art expert but I will try to explain what I understand from this movie.
The film basically tries to show the horrors of society from a feminine point of view. Even from the title we can tell that Men brings light to the very sensitive issues of toxic masculinity and misogyny in its own unique way. One really cool way that this movie stands out is by showing all the men, except James, with a single face which is that of the actor, Rory Kinnear. Every man behaves in a certain way that just screams toxic masculinity and with the same face it just stresses on the statement that "All men are the same".
All the male characters impact Harper in different ways. In general, she is hardly taken serious and is blamed for the wrongs of the men. Even when James threatens to kill himself he lets her know that his death would be her fault and so she carries the guilt after he dies. In her own words, she is haunted by the memory of her husband falling to his death.
From the beginning it is clear that all the men have the same face but it seems like Harper does not notice. I don't know if that is the case but another reason, in my opinion, why all the men would have the same face would be if Harper viewed all men as being the same. This would make sense because even the guy that was somewhat good had the same face as the others.
One thing that really struck me about Harper was how relatively calm she was with everything going on. Yes she was scared when the men tried to attack her but she wasn't particularly fazed by all the strange things that happened. I've seen a lot of horror films and have seen characters scream and run away at the sight of the impossible but it wasn't necessarily the case in this one. At first I thought the character was awful for not being very expressive but then I realized something very crucial. Given that the movie tried to show the poor treatment of society towards women, Harper was not really expressive probably because she was used to living in a man's world. You can say that it was just business as usual for her.

I've seen many movies that leave little to no impression on me later. These movies are easily forgotten and never rewatched. Men, on the other hand, is a movie that I watched and could not get my mind off. The film sure tries to pass an important message in a very strange and unique way but the impression left is not so great. Yes the film is unforgettable but it has very disturbing scenes that I just can't seem to get out of my head. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but I think I'm traumatized by some of the things that I had to see.
Not every aspect of Men is visually disturbing. For one, the bright green color of the fields and trees present a very beautiful view of the countryside. Also the really ominous color of orange or red when we see flashbacks of Harper and James were also very good. This film gets an A+ from me in the colors department.
The sounds used in the movie were also really good in my opinion. I like the blend of synths that just keep warning us that terrible stuff is going to happen. The sound that I really loved was one made with a sample of Harper's chants. This sound is played in several scenes and is always a good fit for each scene.

However, if you decide to see Men, just expect crazy things. It wil definitely leave you with a memorable experience. It's going to be confusing at first but you will enjoy it when you start to understand the details that are provided.
All in all, I give the film a score of 7/10.

The movie looks like something I'll watch when I'm in high spirits so I'll be able to calm down and follow it every scene of the way...the story tells the tale of the society, women always with the saying all men are the same and it's clearly what they were trying to depict with the same face and they made it so unique so you'll have to think about it... looking me sounding like I've seen the movie..😂😂..but I'll see it on a probability..

I understand if you're not a fan of horror movies. Many people aren't. Still, if you decide to watch this one just don't expect a regular flow in the story. You will still feel the tension though so yes it would be a good idea to watch it with someone.

I can't say I'm big on watching horror movies because I can't seem to understand most of them, how do you see something in the dark and still choose to walk towards it, but I saw this movie slightly while a friend was watching it.
