From Normal to Strange... to Bizarre! A Wonderful Film! [A Movie Review]

in Movies & TV Shows4 years ago (edited)

I absolutely loved this movie, which I started watching without even seeing what the story is about...

The movie starts in a strange way, with a mail delivery to an old man... and his brother answering the door and telling the mailman he didn't know what his brother ordered and that he was previously arrested for mail bombing. The mailman gets immediately anxious while holding the package in his hand. 😂

We can feel right there that Winfried, the main character in the movie is a peculiar man who doesn't like to follow the society's implicit rules and who never plays by the book.

The movie follows the relationship of this old man with his daughter, who lives abroad as a successful but not exactly happy businesswoman in Bucharest, Romania.

After a quick visit to her family in Germany, she returns to Romania to work on a very important deal for her career.

While there, she gets a surprise visit by her father, Winfried, who starts accompanying her to a series of business events. As the joker he is, he leaves her quite uncomfortable, specially around her boss.

The movie develops in a quite normal way for about 1 hour and 20 minutes... and then, it starts getting a little weird.

After that it goes deep down into the rabbit hole and gets increasingly strange and bizarre. A bit over the 2 hours mark, it gets so strange that it's almost surreal.

All along, the comic situations pop up, one after another... and I had a great time watching it. All I can say is... expect the unexpected. And believe me, it will all be very unexpected! 😏

Yes, it is a very long movie, with 2h and 42 minutes but it's also one of those movies that won't bore you the slightest. It's worth every single minute of it and I'm glad that European cinema doesn't force directors to stay under that 1h 40m mark. You wouldn't be able to make such movies with that limitation.

If the first poster didn't convince you enough... maybe this one will do the trick:

You will definitely need subtitles for this movie, unless you know English, German and Romanian.

Most of the movie is filmed in Romania and it gives the viewer the contrast between the lower and higher classes of the Romanian society.

Peter Simonischek and Sandra Hüller play the main characters in the story and they do it very well. They are very convincing in their parts, with Peter Simonischek playing the humorous old man and Sandra Hüller as the focused and cold businesswoman.

I rate this with a 9 out of 10. While it's not a super hilarious movie, it will keep you smiling until the end.

As a final note, I need to warn you... even though it's a comedy, don't assume it's a kids safe movie, as there are some explicit nude scenes. So, watch it with your husband or wife but not with your children.

It has become the slave of the life system and lost the child inside. and most importantly, a movie that needs to be watched by people who have lost their sense of humor. thanks for sharing with us. Nice review and suggestion. I'm sorry for my bad english.

No worries. European cinema has some really great movies. It's a pity that most Americans will never hear about them.

Thanks for your visit.

Looks like a good film. I will check it out on Netflix.
