What's Your Compulsion...? [A Movie Review]

Toc Toc is an extremely hilarious Spanish comedy about a group of patients who are forced by circumstances to spend a few hours together in the same room. That wouldn't be a problem in most cases but here we are talking about patients suffering from different kinds of OCD (Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder) and this is where the title for the movie comes from. In Spanish: OCD becomes TOC (Trastorno Obsesivo-Compulsivo).

The patients who end up together show clear signs of their compulsions right from the start and soon enough, their behaviours and quirks start affecting each other, leading to some confusion, mix ups and confrontations.

The plot is simple enough... and of course, with such a premise... the story had to be fun! 😀

Federico is the first character to get to the doctor's waiting room... and he suffers from Tourette's Syndrome, meaning he can't control himself and one of his tics is shouting offensive words from time to time. 😆

Blanca works at a medical lab and is a cleaning maniac. As soon as she touches anything or someone touches her, she can't control herself and heads up to the bathroom to wash herself. Initially she believes that Federico is a pervert and starts running away from him, in a very hysterical manner. 🤭

Ana María suffers from a checking compulsion, so she keeps returning home, over and over again, to check if she has done all sorts of things, from closing the windows to the cookie's jar. She keeps repeating religious signs when she's distressed... and she's also very influenced by what other people say. Every time Federico shouts something offensive, she prays and makes the sign of the cross. 🤣

Emilio is a taxi driver obsessed by numbers and as such, he's always counting several things and making head calculations about it. Hoarding is another of his problems and the reason he decided to get help, after he realised his girlfriend wasn't going to put up with it for much longer. He's the patient who's the most self-aware of his problem and the one who's most comprehensive of other people's issues.

Otto is a weird character who almost acts like a kid... he cannot bring himself to step on lines, so he keeps jumping over things and walking over the furniture to avoid stepping lines drawn on the floor! He's also obsessed with symmetry and keeps rearranging items so that they're in some kind of order. 🙃

Lili was the most funny character, in my opinion. She simply feels the need to repeat everything she says, which can mean just saying the same word twice... or making a long speech and then repeating the whole thing from start to end. She spends the first half of the movie unnoticed, by avoiding speaking. Until that moment, she only mutters a few words here and then... and almost looks normal when compared to the others. 😊

As you can imagine, having this group of people together in the same room for a long time will inevitably lead to some really funny and awkward situations. I don't want to reveal much more of the plot, in order not to ruin the experience for you.

So, the main question is... What will happen to these patients?

  • Will they learn and adapt to the behaviours of the others?
  • Or will they get mad and start attacking each other?
  • Will they simply avoid confrontation and leave the room?

What do you think they'll do? To find out the answer, please watch the movie! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Toc Toc is completely spoken in Spanish, so if you can't understand the language, you'll need subtitles.

The scenery is not an important part of the movie. While the movie has a few scenes filmed outside, in the city of Madrid, the largest part of the action happens inside the waiting room of a psychiatrist who seems to never arrive, leaving the 6 patients to deal with each other's manias and compulsions for longer than they wanted to...

The cast is brilliant. Every single one of the 6 characters gives a superb and believable performance and you will be drawn to these characters in a good way, wanting to know what will happen to each and everyone of them.

Oscar Martínez is Federico, a typical patient with Tourette's Syndrome. His ticks are believable and awkward enough to be funny but not over the top, making his performance a very credible one.

Alexandra Jiménez as Blanca, the lady who is obsessed about Cleaning, gives an extremely funny performance.

Rossy de Palma plays the more serious character Ana María, the woman who keeps Praying and Checking if she's not missing anything. She also gives an interesting performance.

Paco León plays the part of Emilio, the Numbers and Hoarding guy who tries to act as a re-conciliating character, making a bridge between the others.

Adrián Lastra represents Otto, the guy obsessed with Symmetry and who can't step over lines. He is extremely comical all through the movie.

And last, but not the least, we have Nuria Herrero as Lili, the Repetition girl. She is both charming and funny in every single thing she does... or say! What a great actress. 👌

I rate this movie a 9 out of 10, mostly for the story and the great acting. And of course, how much it made me laugh! 😂

Nunca vi... Já adicionei à lista ;)

Espero que te escaques a rir tanto quanto eu. 😅

Since I'm at a very basic Spanish level, a movie like this would be perfect, as it's very action based. The family's Spanish is much less than mine, so they could even enjoy a bit with English subtitles, only if we can get our digital hands on it.

I watched it on NetFlix but it's very likely that there's a .torrent file somewhere. 😉

I hope you can find it. Thanks for stopping by.

We've got a Netflix password, so we'll try a Spanish VPN to see if we can pull it up. We can some really limited choices accessing Netflix from Suriname without using a VPN.

Oh, really? I'm using a Portuguese account and it's full of Spanish movies and series.

I didn't even knew that NetFlix had a different offer depending on the country. 🤔

uau....After a review like that , I also want to see that movie
Very well done ...
