As the story unfolds, Esther's behavior becomes increasingly alarming. She exhibits a disturbing propensity for violence, pushing a bully from the playground and later causing grave injuries. Her ability to manipulate situations, coupled with her unsettling relationship with Max, becomes evident as she leans into her role as the misunderstood child, while subtly sowing discord within the family.
Kate remains suspicious of Esther, particularly after she witnesses several troubling behaviors. Despite her concerns, John often dismisses her instincts, leading to further isolation for Kate as each attempt to address Esther's troubling behavior is met with resistance.
