President Harry Truman, responding to the supposed national threat, reinforced a narrative that sought to deflect public concern, labeling the sightings as radar anomalies—specifically attributing them to temperature inversions that compromised pilot visibility. This narrative served to placate the public; however, many Americans suspected that the government was withholding crucial information concerning these mysterious encounters.
