Growing up with Chinese parents comes with its own cultural weight. My mom was particularly upset and expressed her disappointment when I chose to marry a foreigner instead of a wealthy Chinese man. "I told you to marry a rich guy," she lamented, to which I humorously reminded her of her earlier statement about wanting me to marry an Irish guy. However, despite her initial frustrations, she was ultimately pleased that I found someone to marry, especially since I was already 31 when I tied the knot. In Chinese culture, that is considered quite late, so on my wedding day, my mom jokingly declared, "Sold! No refunds!"
