When the concept of the ELT was born, it was initially envisioned as the OWL — an OverWhelmingly Large Telescope with a staggering primary mirror measuring 100 meters in diameter. However, logistical challenges and budget constraints led experts to refine their approach, ultimately resulting in the construction of the ELT, which features a slightly smaller yet still formidable 39-meter (128-foot) primary mirror.
Despite falling short of the original vision, the ELT is set to become the world's largest telescope. With its enhanced capabilities, it promises to deliver unprecedented insights into the cosmos, edging us closer to the fundamental question: Are we alone in the universe?
