As part of the probe, the Commerce Department will investigate the "feasibility of increasing domestic semiconductors capacity" in order to reduce reliance on imports and whether additional trade measures, including tariffs, are "necessary to protect national security."
The investigation encompasses a wide range of items, including chip components such as silicon wafers, chipmaking equipment, and "downstream products that contain semiconductors."
Semiconductors play a role in essentially every type of modern electronics, giving the investigation massive implications for Trump's global trade war as he seeks to boost U.S. manufacturing.
The Commerce Department will first allow for public comments on the investigation to be submitted no later than 21 days from Wednesday.
However, on Sunday, Trump reportedly said he will be announcing new tariff rates on imported semiconductors over the next week, and that flexibility will be shown to certain companies.
On the same day, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told ABC News' "This Week" that separate tariffs for semiconductors and electronic products were coming in "probably a month or two."
Trump's Commerce Department cited the probe under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which can permit the U.S. president to impose tariffs on the grounds of national security.
Nvidia, the chipmaker powering much of the artificial intelligence boom, announced on Monday a plan to design and build factories that, for the first time, will produce NVIDIA AI supercomputers entirely in the U.S.
Last month, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's largest chip foundry, announced its intention to increase its existing investments in advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. by an additional $100 billion.

Known as DolphinGemma, the resarchers are currently testing to see if this LLM and its Cetacean Hearing Augmentation Telemetry (CHAT) system can mimic the vocal behavior of dolphins.

If the agency succeeds, Meta could be forced to divest Instagram and WhatsApp.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the stand on Monday in the Federal Trade Commission’s landmark competition trial, which seeks to break up his company for allegedly creating a social networking monopoly.
His testimony followed opening arguments from the FTC and Meta in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, culminating in what’s expected to be two days of questioning.
Monday’s opening arguments also capped off a nearly six-year process that began in 2019, when the FTC under then-President Donald Trump first launched its antitrust probe into the tech giant.
The tech mogul is defending his company’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, two deals that FTC alleges were strategic moves to eliminate competition and solidify the company’s dominance in the social media space.
FTC lead attorney Daniel Matheson opened by probing Meta’s core mission, pressing Zuckerberg on whether its platforms are primarily designed to connect users with people they already know.
“It’s the case that over time, the ‘interest’ part of that has gotten built out more than the ‘friend’ part,” the 40-year-old social media tycoon said. “(Users are) connected to a lot more groups and other kinds of things. The ‘friend’ part has gone down quite a bit but it’s still something we care about.”
China freezes rare earth exports, choking global tech and defense supply chains
With no export licenses being issued, shipments remain frozen and prices are rising fast.
The U.S.-China trade war has entered a dangerous new phase of geopolitical arm-twisting.
On April 4, China halted exports of key rare earth minerals and magnets in direct retaliation for the latest U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
The freeze threatens to disrupt global supply chains across industries that depend on these critical materials—including semiconductors, electric vehicles, aerospace, and defense.
The new rules require Chinese exporters to obtain licenses to ship rare earths abroad.
China accounts for 90% of global rare earth production, and for certain heavy rare earths like dysprosium and terbium, that number was close to 99% until recently. These elements are crucial for building EV motors, drones, missiles, and a wide range of high-tech components.
According to Reuters, shipments stopped immediately after the new restrictions took effect.
Exporters must now wait weeks or possibly months for licenses from the Ministry of Commerce.
“When asked by my clients when their cargoes will be able to leave China, we give them an estimated time of 60 days but it may actually take longer than that,” one trader told Reuters.
Michael Silver, CEO of American Elements, told The New York Times that his company was advised to expect a 45-day delay. “We increased our inventory last winter in anticipation of a trade war,” he said, though he acknowledged that existing contracts can only be fulfilled for now.

While financial details were not disclosed, the move signals the company’s (including ex-Tesla staff scientist) ambition to compete in the global robotics race, including with China, by combining 3D printing capabilities and AI-driven humanoid tech.
“We believe robotics could be the next frontier unlocked by AI — and it should be open, affordable, and private. Our vision: a future where everyone in the community, from hobbyists to enterprises, can build or use robot assistants or games, starting from open solutions instead of closed, remote controlled, hardware,” said Thomas Wolf, co-founder, and chief scientist at Hugging Face, in a statement.

I have some Swap.Hive, I should try swapping for something else and see how it works.
I had the most issues w/ trying to swap out of hive on the previous version. I wouldn’t call it low hanging because imo there would be a lot more hive trading if it was smooth in the last version.
Im a small fish but I only felt comfortable using beeswap after hive trx kept getting stuck. If it worked previously I would have at least swapped 1k of volume but been using beeswax instead because of stuck transactions on last version

not saying ur wrong @khaleelkazi but remember the support tickets were backed up for awhile (months) during some of big updates. Myself and a number of users I know completely stopped using LeoDEX for hive swaps during that period and I know we weren’t the only ones.
People stopped using that path because it got stuck all the time (back then) and no one will keep swapping if they have stuck trades.
I get it, the bigger vision is cross-chain, but the lack of hive volume was definitely more than people just not using it

I think there are not much active users on #inleo. As compared to on ecency as there are many active users to interact. But the interface of inleo is quite good and comfortable.
It ebbs and flows at times. I have been AFK for quite a bit due to life, but usually am moderately active.
