Central to the author’s critique is the idea that Much of modern civilization operates on illusions—what they call a "civilizational nightclub." The society we portray and uphold thrives on the spectacle of being "cool" and "popular" but is, in reality, profoundly "cringe" and unpopular at its core. The society is built around maintaining appearances and social signaling that ultimately serve to distort and hide deeper issues of alienation, disconnection, and decline.
