By late 1948, the Communists had pushed the Nationalists out of their key strongholds, including Manchuria and Beijing. In 1949, Mao declared the founding of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing, marking a radical shift in Chinese governance. The defeated Nationalists retreated across the Taiwan Strait, establishing their government on Taiwan, known as the Republic of China.
