The FBI and law enforcement grew increasingly wary of Hoffa's connections to organized crime. Hoffa's 1967 conviction on charges of attempted bribery, jury tampering, and fraud led to a 13-year prison sentence, though President Richard Nixon commuted his sentence in 1971 after serving nearly five years. By then, Hoffa's influence remained palpable, but so did the growing power of the mafia controlling the union.
