However, the landscape has drastically changed over the past ten years. The cost of solar energy has plummeted so dramatically that it now surpasses even the most optimistic predictions made for 2150—more than a century into the future. Today, the price of solar power reaches a point where producing synthetic fuels from sunlight and air becomes cheaper than extracting fossil fuels from the ground. Currently, about 5-6% of global electricity is derived from solar, but by 2042, it’s predicted that 95% of humanity’s energy will be generated downstream of solar photovoltaic power.
