According to reports, many victims may have died either by being run over in the chaos or during the ensuing panic and stampede. Medics on the scene found numerous bodies on the ground, overwhelmed by the sheer number of injured and dead, with ambulance resources stretched thin. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that no strikes were conducted against the convoy, and that the crowd's aggression, violence, and looting prompted soldiers to respond with warning shots. IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that thousands of Palestinians rushed the trucks, violently pushing and trampling others, which resulted in fatalities.
