Part 2/11:
Transnistria is a small, predominantly Russian-speaking territory nestled along Moldova’s eastern border with Ukraine. Declaring independence from Moldova in 1990 over fears of reunification with Romania and marginalization of its Russian-speaking population, Transnistria has operated as a de facto state with its own government and military, yet it lacks international recognition. The conflict, rooted in ethnic and political differences, resulted in a 1992 ceasefire and left Transnistria as a frozen conflict zone.
