MLB commissioner Rob Manfred recently reiterated that expansion is on the table, with plans to add teams in both the East and West. However, the league could have flexibility; instead of strictly dividing expansion into geographically fixed categories, they could realign divisions to accommodate the best markets, regardless of whether they’re east or west. This makes the ongoing competition between Portland and Salt Lake City even more relevant—MLB might prefer the two most viable markets rather than sticking to a traditional east-west division.
