Part 9/14:
Sweden was required to bolster its terrorism laws, lift arms export restrictions on Turkey, and address security concerns to satisfy Ankara’s demands. Turkey’s approval was also contingent upon U.S. approval for the sale of F-16 fighter jets, a move that is now likely to proceed once Turkey signs the relevant documents.
Hungary remains the final obstacle. Although Prime Minister Victor Orbán expressed willingness to resume discussions and invited Sweden’s official to Budapest, he has historically been cautious, citing criticisms from Sweden about Hungary’s democratic standards as a potential reason for delay. Nonetheless, Orbán’s recent overtures suggest that Hungary might soon approve Sweden’s accession, paving the way for NATO’s next expansion.
