Back in 2010-2011, designers from the firm Rebar, collaborating with Gehl Architects, pioneered guerrilla street art by converting parking spots into mini parks or urban installations—showcasing possibilities for better use of space. Their efforts challenged the status quo, asking whether parking could become libraries, outdoor cinemas, or sunbathing spots. During the pandemic, these ideas gained traction as city residents began utilizing curb spaces for outdoor dining, parks, and other "shoplet" and "parklet" initiatives, transforming streetscapes into vibrant, community-oriented environments.
