The recent innovation involved genetic reprogramming of silk worms. Researchers spliced DNA from an East Asian orb-weaving spider into the silk worm genome. This genetic modification altered the silk-producing capabilities of the worms, enabling them to produce a new, tougher type of silk. The resulting fiber is approximately six times as tough as Kevlar and ten times as strong as nylon, marking a substantial advancement in synthetic and natural fiber engineering.
