In response to these challenges, the Open Insulin Project has emerged as a pioneering effort to democratize insulin production. Rather than attempting to have individuals produce insulin at home—an approach fraught with safety and regulatory issues—the project focuses on sharing knowledge and protocols openly.
The goal is to provide community laboratories around the world with the blueprint for producing insulin. By making these protocols freely available, the project hopes to enable local labs and organizations to set up insulin manufacturing operations, thereby increasing supply and reducing reliance on the dominant pharmaceutical companies.
