Part 7/10:
In Cincinnati, MORTAR has emerged as a beacon of hope. Originally in a neighborhood labeled one of the most dangerous, MORTAR has helped transform Over-the-Rhine into a thriving hub of commerce and culture. It does so by focusing on supporting Black entrepreneurs through education, shared storefronts, and access to funding—loans, grants, and equity investments.
Allen, one of MORTAR's leaders, articulates the mission to redefine wealth and ownership. By intentionally creating space for Black entrepreneurs, MORTAR aims not just for individual success but for community transformation. Over the past seven years, over 300 graduates have come through the program, with 71% still running their businesses—a testament to the effectiveness of their model.
