The Town with Ben Affleck is crushing it on HBO Max and makes total sense because this movie is a damn masterpiece of the heist genre, Affleck directed and starred in this thing about Boston bank robbers and it is tense as hell from start to finish, the cast is stacked with Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm and even has a Bosch connection with Titus Welliver in there, the action scenes are brutal and realistic, the romance feels earned instead of forced, and that Fenway Park shootout is one of the best sequences ever filmed, this movie proved Affleck could actually direct after Gone Baby Gone and set him up for Argo, if you have not seen it yet then stop whatever you are doing and watch it right now. Apple TV just ordered Safe Houses which is a new spy thriller series from Gideon Raff who created Homeland so you know this is gonna be intense as hell, if youre into that espionage paranoia type of content this should be right up your alley because Raff knows how to do tension and moral ambiguity better than most people working in television right now, no cast announced yet but the fact that Apple is backing it means theyre putting real money behind this thing, after Homeland became such a massive success it makes sense that networks are trying to get Raff to do more spy content, the premise is about international espionage and safe houses which could go in a million different directions but with Raff running things you can expect complex characters and plenty of oh shit moments that make you question everything.
