Part 4/12:
Perhaps the most startling development is the political transformation of New York City. Once known for its crime-fighting mayors like Rudy Giuliani, and more recently for policies balancing business interests with social responsibilities, the city now appears to have embraced a far-left, even communist, agenda.
This shift was cemented with the election of Zora Mandami as mayor, winning by nearly 10 percentage points and securing over 181,000 votes with 91% of ballots counted. Mandami, a Queen’s Assemblyman, ran against incumbent Eric Adams, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and a Republican candidate, Curtis Swa. The fact that Cuomo and Adams—both considered establishment figures—faced little chance against Mandami underscores how far the city’s political attitudes have swung.
