Earth, and asteroids, orbit the Sun in predictable paths, but the chance of a collision remains a persistent threat. Larger asteroids have been cataloged primarily because of their significant damage potential—those 10 kilometers or more in size, often called "dinosaur killers." However, smaller objects, capable of regional devastation if they hit populated areas, have eluded comprehensive tracking.
