Part 2/13:
One of the most insidious aspects of being partnered with a narcissist is falling prey to powerful self-deceptions. These distortions are not superficial but rooted in fundamental psychological needs such as self-love, safety, acceptance, and feelings of superiority. When a partner provides an ongoing fantasy in which these needs are met—by flattering, idealizing, or affirming the individual—there’s little incentive to leave. The recipient clings to this illusion because it satisfies deep-seated, unmet subconscious needs, making it psychologically punishing to confront reality.
