Narcissistic pathology does not typically fade as one gets older unless specific antisocial behaviors are involved, which may diminish or change. Instead, other facets of narcissism tend to become more aggravating, overshadowing previous borderline behaviors. As a result, the maternal figure's personality may shift from being superficially volatile to displaying a more blatant, ostentatious display of self-absorption, entitlement, and lack of empathy—traits that can be especially damaging in family relationships.
