Another hallmark characteristic is emotion dysregulation, also known as emotional liability. People with BPD frequently experience intense, overwhelming emotions that they find difficult to control. These feelings can drown them, making self-regulation a significant challenge.

Suicidal ideation and self-harm are also prominent features. Many with BPD experience persistent suicidal thoughts, with some in a considerable percentage—around 11%—engaging in actual suicide attempts. Self-mutilation or other forms of self-harm are quite common as mechanisms to cope with emotional pain or to feel something amid emotional numbness.
