Part 3/15:

Sherlock joined the Chicago Police Department in 1989, during an era when law enforcement operated with a more informal and, some might say, "old-fashioned" approach. He recalls units within the department—particularly specialized gang crime investigators—whose methods were far more direct and often off the record. These officers worked undercover, gathering intelligence and directly confronting gang leaders, sometimes with tacit approval from city officials. They would meet with gang leaders and essentially demand that violence cease, an approach that, while controversial today, was effective at disrupting dangerous activity.
