Part 2/9:
At the heart of the controversy is a significant alteration to Superman’s foundational story, specifically regarding his parents and their intentions. Traditionally, Superman (Kal-El) was sent to Earth by his biological parents, Jor-El and Lara, to escape Krypton’s destruction and to be a symbol of hope for humanity. Gunn’s version, however, presents a darker and more unsettling narrative.
In this new interpretation, Superman (or Kal-El) receives a message from his biological parents shortly after landing on Earth. The initial part of this message is wholesome, expressing love and pride. But the twist comes with the second part of the message, which is only revealed later in the film after Lex Luthor infiltrates the Fortress of Solitude.
