Cleveland’s central prediction is that within the next ten years, obesity will significantly increase, especially among the middle and lower classes. This rise will baffle many because, paradoxically, we possess medications—such as the recent drug Ozempic—that ostensibly prevent obesity and promote weight loss. Yet, despite these advances, obesity levels are projected to soar.
Why? Cleveland suggests that society’s focus on pharmacological solutions may overshadow deeper issues related to human identity and self-control. This, he argues, will lead to a public perception that the medications are insufficient or ineffective, even as they are used more widely.
