Tragedy, as distinct from mere sadness, involves competing passions—anger, fear, guilt—that become so overwhelming they drown out wisdom. It’s akin to a raging storm where reason cannot penetrate, and all the participants are caught in a cycle from which they seem incapable of escaping.
