Part 4/7:
According to Hamill, the backstory he devised features an entirely different, more tragic fate for Luke Skywalker, one that involves love, loss, and profound despair. In this version, Luke falls in love with a woman, chooses to abandon his Jedi teachings, and starts a family. Tragically, their young child inadvertently kills itself with a lightsaber, leading to devastating grief. The wife, overwhelmed by sorrow, then takes her own life using the same weapon.
"What could make someone give up a devotion to what is basically a religious entity to give up being a Jedi? Well, the love of a woman," Hamill explained. This emotional catastrophe, he reasoned, could justify Luke's disillusionment and retreat, aligning with the darker themes he believed suited the character's descent.
