Part 1/15:
The Making of Animal House: An Accidental Classic
The Origins and Vision Behind Animal House
Animal House resulted from a spontaneous idea that grew into a cultural phenomenon. Its origins trace back to Maddie Simmons, a producer closely involved in comedy projects, who recounts how the film was born out of desperation and a desire to tell authentic, unruly stories about college life. The initial spark came when Doug Kenney, one of the founders of the National Lampoon magazine, confided in Simmons about his burnout from deadlines and his impending departure from the project. Simmons, recognizing Kenney’s genius and potential, pleaded with him not to leave, quickly proposing they create a movie together—an idea Kenney eagerly embraced.
