Frustrated by being overlooked for head coaching positions, Lombardi turned to the NFL, initially serving as an assistant with the New York Giants. His candid, intense coaching style was initially off-putting to players, but Lombardi’s mastery of motivation and strategy soon earned respect, culminating in leading the Giants to a championship in 1956 and the dramatic 'Greatest Game Ever Played' in 1958.
