One of the most compelling aspects of film noir is its elusive nature. Defining whether a film is “truly noir” varies from person to person, influenced by visual style, mood, narrative, and thematic elements. For instance, Double Indemnity remains the quintessential noir, packed with all the genre’s signature tropes: voice-over, femme fatale, rain-soaked streets, morally gray characters, and snappy dialogue.
Conversely, some argue Roger Rabbit deserves a spot as a noir film because of its detective protagonist and themes of cynicism and despair, despite the comedic veneer.
